Hi, I’m Dario Rodighiero, musician and film composer. You don’t know me yet, but you will: I’ve been accepted to one of the best music schools in the world, Berklee College, in America, where I’ve always wanted to move through to pursue a career in film music.

I’ve never thought I would be making this video, but this is literally a life-mission I have to accomplish.

I'm originally from Italy, and I have been living in Dublin for the past 5 years. Here’s how I ended up here, and how I’m one step from this life-changing opportunity.

I grew up in a small Italian village as an only child. As a child, I was always eager to create and communicate, but I was an outcast and not really well embraced by others. One Christmas, I received a small electric piano and learned to play the piano by ear. There are no musicians in my family, but there was a big collection of music records of different genres and a stereo in my house. As a child, this was my music school and my world.

I always rejected the idea of studying music, because, in my mind, music is a form of art, a means of expression, my way to create and communicate. I couldn’t get the relationship within something like music and a school. My parents tried to make me attend music lessons, but I never enjoyed it. My teacher was the records, fellow musicians I had jam sessions with, and film soundtracks. The film soundtracks were special, and they captivated me, and I started buying soundtrack records and got lost in them.

16 years ago, a drummer told me about Berklee College and that I would be a good fit. I had no idea what he was really talking about; I understood it was a music school in Boston. I went back home, and I told that to my Dad. Well, the next day, my Dad was happy to help me financially.

I was nervous about leaving Italy and moving abroad. Also, all I could think about was the money it would cost my father, and I didn’t want him to run into financial problems because of me. I decided to stay; for 10 more years in Italy, I became even more passionate about music and playing the piano.

As time went on, I became more infatuated with America, especially New York. I never had enough money to visit. I tried to sell my car, but I fell asleep driving back from work late one night and crashed. My dream was smashed, and I had to start again from nothing.

Long story short, a year later, I visited friends in Dublin, and I fell in love with the music scene. In a matter of 4 weeks, I was back again, with my luggage and 300€. I found a job, slept in a hostel for 3 months. I got a keyboard and played improvised pieces on Grafton Street. In a month, I shifted to playing in venues after a music promoter took my number. Currently, since then, I've been playing with a couple of bands.

Later I was shown how to use a computer to create music. After that, I learned how to create film scores. I was playing the piano at a restaurant, and an actress asked me if I could score a short film that her director was shooting. I scored the film just by reading the screenplay. They later invited me as a composer to a film festival in Chicago a year later; this was my first time in America. When I saw my name on the big screen, I said to myself, "This is my future." Since then, I've scored many short movies. I feel that I need more opportunities, then what is afforded here in Ireland. It was suggested again that I apply to Berklee.

In February, I applied, auditioned, and later got accepted. I was so happy.  As you can imagine, we're talking of one of the best and expensive music schools in the world, with a $45, 000 of tuition, it’s pretty hard to pay even if I had a car to sell. This is not just a dream; this is my goal. No matter what, I'll be a composer whose name you’ll see on the big screen. I know that Berklee would help me make this happen.

I would be more than grateful if you were able to provide any assistance, no matter the amount. I will make sure that someday when you sit in the cinema, you see on the credits “music by Dario Rodighiero," and you’re able to say "that is also thanks to me." I can't wait to dedicate all my works to my family, friends, and all of those who have helped me along the way to make this dream come true.
