Get Corry Shaw Back On Her Feet

If you’ve had anything to do with comedy in the past twenty years – whether you’re a performer or a normal, balanced human – it’s very likely that my dear friend Corry Shaw has had a positive impact on your life. She has been pivotal to many of the comedy projects I’m proudest of, and dozens if not hundreds of comedians have benefited from her support, wisdom and energy.
Beyond comedy, the list of people she’s helped gets even longer. She is a tireless promoter of good causes and I’ve rarely met a human so devoted to improving the lot of others, even when her own material and emotional resources have been stretched almost to breaking point.
This is one of those moments. And since Corry’s as inept at asking for assistance as she is ferocious in getting it for others, a group of us have decided to launch this intervention.
You remember that bit in the Bible where God tests a bloke called Job by stripping him of his health, property and security? Compared with Corry’s recent history, Job is basically at a spa retreat. If you know her at all you might be aware of some of the issues she has had with her back, womb, mother, cats, house and life. But you won’t have heard all of it because she bangs on about it a lot less than Job.
The headline is, she’s had a long-running spinal problem which was misdiagnosed and mistreated for a calamitously long time. In recent months she’s barely been able to walk for lengthy periods and, despite the supportiveness of her employer, this has meant she couldn’t work much. Yet she’s still only been the second illest person in her family because her mum has a long term progressive condition. Also she has these bloody cats because she’s an idiot and even one of THOSE is sick. The combination of all this has put her under unacceptable strain.
(Oh, also she lost all her possessions in a flood a couple of years ago, but that’s almost a footnote.)
So Corry needs a bit of money to tide her through these next couple of months, after which she’s made various arrangements which will ease things. She’s incapable of asking for loans because of the fear of not being able to pay people back. That is why we’re doing this.
Times are hard for pretty much everyone, of course, and there are an awful lot of causes worthy of your support. But if you are one of the very many people who have ever thought ‘I really should buy that woman a drink’, it would be massively appreciated if you could make this the moment you did it. (It won’t go towards drinks, it’ll go to expensive medications or repairing flood damage or something, but still.)
