<div>Today is my 59th birthday, and birthdays have a way of making us think about where we’ve been and where we’re headed next.

<div>As I begin my 60th year, I’ve been reflecting on one of the biggest goals I’m working toward: replacing our wheelchair-accessible van.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I haven’t driven anywhere since December 5, when our previous van became unsafe to drive.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>For six months, my family and I have been navigating life without the transportation we relied on to get to medical appointments, family outings, community events, and all the everyday places that help us stay connected to the world around us.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Recently, I saw a van in my dream shade of sage green.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I don’t know just yet if that particular van will be the right one for my accessibility needs, but seeing it reminded me that this goal is real.
</div>

<div>For the first time in a while, I could clearly picture what life will look like when my parents and I are back on the road.

<div>I could picture getting them where they need to go.
</div>

</div>
<div>I could picture returning to speaking engagements and community events.

<div>I could picture saying yes to opportunities that simply aren’t possible right now.

<div>And that picture lit a fire in me to keep working toward this goal.

<div>My current wheelchair-accessible van — the vehicle I rely on to transport myself and my parents safely to doctor appointments, physical therapy, and simply out into the world — has now been declared unsafe to drive and beyond repair.

<div>For our family, a reliable van isn’t a convenience.

<div>It’s how we stay connected to essential care.
</div>
<div>It’s how we keep living fully and freely.

<div>This year has been a journey of resilience, healing, and renewed purpose. After years on bed rest to recover from a Stage IV pressure wound, I finally had successful surgery in March 2023. Today, I’m thrilled to say that I’m driving again, re-discovering independence, and embracing life beyond limits.

<div>But there’s a challenge: our current wheelchair-accessible van, lovingly called The InspireMobile, is no longer safe. Its rusted undercarriage makes it increasingly unsafe, and therefore, less reliable, especially as both my dad and I now require a wheelchair-accessible vehicle.

<div>Until very recently, I hadn't driven in 6 1/2 years. Since August 28, 2017, to be exact, I'd been on bed rest doing everything humanly possible to heal a Stage IV pressure wound.
</div>

</div>
<div>On March 15, 2023, I was finally able to have surgery to close the wound, and, after a year of healing, I've been out and about in my home town a few times practicing driving.
</div>

</div>
<div>But there's a problem and it's a big one ... the undercarriage of my van, aka The InspireMobile, is rusting out, and, for safety's sake, it's time to purchase a new wheelchair accessible van that can accommodate both me and my dad, since he is now in a wheelchair, too.

<div>Moreover, now that I can sit up more often, it is my fondest wish to be able to do my inspirational speaking in person, and more than just locally.
