My name is Lish and I'm in Seattle fundraising for my sister-in-law and her family that lost thier home in the recent California fires. I am managing their gofundme so that they can focus on recovery. (Updated 10/12/17 with new info--will continue to update as needed.)
Sunday night at 1:30 AM, Paula, Marcos, and their two children and pets had to flee from their home. They saw the fire coming over the ridge and new they had no time. They woke their neighbors, packed up their kids and pets, and drove through tornados of embers to the safety of a friend's house. They had no warning--if Paula hadn't looked out their window and saw the fire...well, let's just say I'm glad she did.
The inspector has been in touch with Paula--their home is gone. Due to the sudden nature of their exodus, they weren't able to bring anything with them. Which means they have lost everything. Marcos does a lot of music production, and all of his equipment was in their home. All of their clothes, furniture, pictures, etc--are gone. Which means besides losing all of their worldly goods, they are unsure as to what their work situation is going to be like and where they are going to relocate to. They had no insurance and no savings.
Right now they're still assessing and trying to get through the shock. We're trying to raise emergency funds to help cover daily living expenses like food, gas, toiletries, as well as new clothing, medicine, etc. The emergency fund will also give them a little time to figure all the details of their living situation out. While they are currently staying with friends, they will need to find a new place to live--and as the fires are still burning, they might need to evacuate again.
They are starting over. This kind of thing takes time, and in the mean time we want to make sure they're safe and taken care of so they can focus on the journey of recovery. Anything you can send helps. I will post as we have new information, as well as list anything specific they need as it comes up. We're currently getting everything verified so that Paula and family can access the donations directly. My only part in this is to update the information and keep everything moving so they don't have to worry about it.
As someone who has gone through a disaster (Katrina) I would like to mention that one thing you can't replace with financial donations are photos--so if you know Paula and Marcos and you have photos of their family, please consider making copies of the photos and having them ready to send once they get settled again. I know that after Katrina it meant a lot to my mom when people did that.
