Composer Gerald Busby, who has worked with the likes of Robert Altman (3 Women) and Paul Taylor (Runes), and has influenced generations of artists have been living with a debilitating illness.  It was decided that Gerald's chronic ulcerative colitis required a radical colectomy in August 2020 which has proven to be extremely hard for him to bounce back from. That surgery and an ongoing recovery that followed have caused increasing pain, an inability to eat, and the loss of nearly 100 pounds over this past year.  In early November, he went back in for another surgery to help him receive nourishment.  He is now fed primarily through a G-Tube in his abdomen. These surgeries over the course of 2020 have caused muscle deterioration and weakness. Gerald is currently working toward walking short distances with the aid of a walker without having to sit and rest.  Just last year this undeniably charming man was living independently, walking around New York City, and living his life fully, which included writing music every day.

Having just returned from a stay in a skilled rehabilitation facility, Gerald just turned 85 in his apartment at the Chelsea Hotel but has significant gaps in his care.  He requires care 10-12 + hours, 7 days a week, with some of those hours requiring skilled nursing - needs that are currently not being met. We are asking for help because Gerald has given the world so much over the years - film scores and chamber pieces, concertos, and symphonies (many yet to be performed). As many of us are aware, there are significant gaps in care for our loved ones who wish to live out the remainder of their days in their home.

100% of contributions will be directed to Gerald's medical care. Our goal is to help make a better life for Gerald.  The money you are so graciously donating will help to pay for his private skilled care to administer his liquid nutrition through his abdominal feeding tube, to ensure his colostomy bag is properly fitted and changed and that his stoma is cleaned and cared for to reduce any risk of irritation or infection.  The caregivers Gerald does have are not allowed to dispense care that is medical in nature, only to clean and run errands and the like.  There are extra supplies that must be purchased and laundry as Gerald lives alone in the city and out of pocket care hours (setting up Gerald's medical appointments for primary care and his regular eye injections for macular degeneration) and chaperoning Gerald to these appointments (transportation in the city) , all expenses that Medicare and Medicaid are not covering or are beyond the amount covered. Your contribution goes exclusively toward an improved quality of daily life for our beloved Gerald Busby.

Thank you for your support of Gerald through this fund. We are eternally grateful to his wonderful colleagues, neighbors, fellow New Yorkers, and friends for their constant support and love.

The Team:  We are dear friends and colleagues of Gerald's who live in New York and Emily is Gerald's niece from Overland Park, KS.    Emily is acting as Gerald's proxy in regards to the receiving of funds and paying for Gerald's expenses.
