George's Accessible Van Plan

Donation protected
Hello,

I’m George Woodworth. I’m 43 and it’s been 9 years since a fall from a tree left me a C-5 quadriplegic. Basically this means that I have limited use of my arms and am paralyzed from the chest down as well as my hands. Before my injury I owned a renovation business, as well as a special care home in partnership with my mom. I also worked part time as a sheriff and security guard. As you can imagine, I was on the go all the time! One of the biggest adjustments to my life after I was injured has been getting used to not being able to jump in my truck and go where I wanted, when I wanted.

Over the past five years I, my wife Catriona and my caregivers have been injured numerous times helping me transfer in and out of the car, then disassembling and reassembling my wheelchair. It’s finally come to the point where accessible public transportation is our only remaining option, Now, I’m unable to go anywhere that isn’t planned days or weeks in advance. There is no accessible transportation at all available on Sundays. Cabs also refuse to transport any amount of wood, therefore making it impossible to operate a woodworking business such as mine.

You have the power to enable me to give back to the disabled community in the same way that others helped me so much when I was first injured. An accessible van will allow me to take a position at a local non-profit charity as a peer support worker to aid newly injured people in seeing that life can still be fulfilling. A van that I can drive with also give me the independence to go to medical appointments, purchase materials and tools for my woodworking business, even go grocery shopping. This is your opportunity to help give me back my freedom!

These numbers are daunting but I know that if we pull together as a community we can achive the goal. New this would cost $89.7k. I have the opportunity to purchase a previously retrofitted van in like new condition for $40k. The retrofit includes, lowered floor, Q’straint, chair docking system, and hand controls.

In the event that I do not reach my goal, all funds that have been raised will go towards the purchase of an older vehicle that has previously been adapted. Your donation will help me reach my goal to be more independent! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Getting off the accessible transit bus.

Me in my happy place a few years ago. I love driving but had to sell this car because it wasn't reliable anymore.

Working in my adapted woodworking shop where I craft cuttingboards and serving trays as well as transfer boards for disabled people like myself.
