George Mitchell, The Dreamer

The Dreamer, 1999



 George Mitchell was amongst the first group of African American artists to receive their MFAs from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After showing across the country and having his work documented in numerous publications most recently The Durham Herald Sun, his career was cut short due to a paralyzing assault committed by a family member.

 At the time he was working on "The Olympic Series", inspired by the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

Today, Mr. Mitchell is a paraplegic and this series has taken on a new meaning. With its completion, the work will symbolize overcoming hardship despite the odds. In order for Mr. Mitchell to realize his dream, he'll need some outside help.

Victory, 1998

The support from this GoFundMe will go towards employing local artists  to assist George Mitchell in realizing his dream. Mitchell has plans for six more paintings and to cast the "Freedom" sculpture in bronze. Only then will his dream of completing his Olympic Series be realized.

By doing this, "Freedom" will serve as a testiment to triumph and overcoming adversity and struggle.
100% of the funds raised will go towards employing local artists to assist George and purchasing the supplies needed to help Mitchell achieve his ultimate dream of exhibiting his Olympic Series and Retrospective show at the North Carolina Central Art Museum.
