Geography of Mark Twain
This fundraising supports the development and maintenance of a comprehensive website of Mark Twain's travels and his relationship with the world. He existed at the cusp of America's industrialization, changing from an agrarian to a highly industrial world. His writings from places around the world, both published and not, reflect his frequently changing views on many significant issues. The Twain's Geography Website has outgrown the "vanity" website stage and needs to be ported and maintained at a professional level.
The website is not about Mark Twain's literary output nor about critical assessment of his writings. It uses Mark Twain as a touchstone to examine the rapid changes, worldwide, occurring between the 19th and 20th centuries. He began in a time of steamboat travel and horse-drawn wagons to a world dominated by railroads; from a time when economies were largely community/town based to a world dominated by international investments and continent spanning capitalist companies, the most obvious being the railroads.
It is my intention that Twain's Geography provide a series of on-line tutorials of a historical geography nature and as a possible platform for the publication of articles and essays that touch on his relationship with such matters.
