Optometry Mission Trip to Kenya

Donation protected
Hi! My name is Gentry Totta, and I am a Sophomore at MidAmerica Nazarene University. I am a double major in Biology and Chemistry with the aspiration of becoming an optometrist. Long term, I would like to take optometry into the mission field where I could combine my passion of serving others with my desire to share the love of Christ.

I often receive the question, “Why an optometrist?” and when considering how to respond, I land upon multiple answers. I have always had a passion to learn and have been full of many questions. This curiosity pushed me into the field of science. Along with my passion to learn, I enjoy being around others and being able to serve them. My curiosity and desire to serve led me to the medical field. I also have a heart for missions, but recognized that by equipping myself with a skill, God would be able to use me to demonstrate His love by providing for others needs. This combination of reasons led me to the goal of becoming an optometrist.

By being an optometrist, I would be able to serve others on a daily basis and would be able to use my acquired skills in the mission field to help provide eye care to those who cannot afford it. I love to learn, and it excites me to think that I could share this passion with others. If a child has poor vision, their learning will be impaired. Providing eye care to these kids would aid in their learning by enabling them to see better. This would be an opportunity for me to help develop a love for learning in others. All the while, I would be able to share the love of Jesus with others.

This all leads me to the you. I have recently been presented with an opportunity of traveling with IDEA Ministries over winter break to help with multiple eye clinics in neighboring villages in Kenya. Over the course of two weeks, I would be able to aid in providing eye care to hundreds of people while getting to share the love of Christ. This first hand experience would not only be an opportunity to serve, but it would also be a time of preparation as I would receive a glimpse of my future aspirations.

I am reaching out for support from you. Primarily for your prayers that God would bless this trip and use it for His glory! Prayers for safe travels and the preparation of the hearts of each of our team’s members. Prayers that seeds would be planted on this trip and relationships of encouragement and fellowship would be made with those we encounter.

Although I intend to be able to support myself financially for future trips through my occupation, I am currently unable to afford this trip by myself. I am beyond grateful for your generosity and appreciate any financial support.

Thank you for your time, prayer, and gift! I am excited to see the ways the Lord will use me and use this trip to transform the lives and hearts of others, including my own.

Thank you,
Gentry Totta
