Gena Teaches Agriculture in Ghana

Hey y'all,
I have accepted a position to be an AgriCorps volunteer in Ghana for the 2015-2016 school year. After studying abroad in Tanzania in 2009, I knew I wouldn't be able to stay away from the vast and incredibly diverse continent that is Africa. AgriCorps is an amazing organization that partners with 4-H Ghana and works to help improve food security in rural villages. I am so excited to be able share my agribusiness and development background with the students and families of my community but I'm elated to know that I will learn so much more from them.
As a member of the AgriCorps, my work will be focused in three areas:
1 – I’ll serve as an agriculture instructor in a junior or senior high school. In this role as a teacher, I’ll utilize the experiential learning model applied to local curriculum. Topics include basic farming and animal husbandry practices in addition to life skills such as nutrition, healthy lifestyles, responsibility, home economics, and financial management.
2 – I’ll serve as a 4-H advisor. I’ll team up with a local advisor in creating a strong 4-H club. The 4-H club is used to facilitate leadership development for student where they learn public speaking, citizenship, parliamentary procedures, and teamwork.
3 – I’ll utilize a school farm or enterprise garden for agribusiness development. I will establish or utilize an existing school farm for student learning, incorporating new technologies or value chain development. The school farm generates income for the school 4-H club but also teaches new techniques to students who can apply these techniques and technologies back on their home farm.
My goal is to raise $2000 to cover my basic living expenses during the year. Any donation, no matter how small will go a long way as well as good vibes and energy to myself and my fellow corps members.
