Gegen das Vergessen - Inklusiver Kurzfilm über Euthanasie

Deutschland 1940: Seit Jonah, ein 17-jähriger Junge mit Downsyndrom, mit seiner Mutter und seinem Bruder Enno in das Dorf gezogen ist, spüren sie Tag für Tag die Kälte und Ablehnung der Dorfgemeinschaft. Die Familie ist einer kollektiven Ausgrenzungsmaschinerie ausgesetzt, die von der menschenverachtenden Ideologie des Nationalsozialismus geprägt ist. Als ein Arzt verordnet, Jonah in ein Heim zu geben – ein Ort, von dem schon ein anderes Kind nie zurückkehrte – beugt sich die Mutter dem Votum. Enno, fest entschlossen, seinen Bruder zu beschützen, kämpft verzweifelt gegen die feindselige Stimmung im Dorf und gegen die Entscheidung seiner Mutter.

Inmitten dieses schmerzhaften Familienkonflikts bleibt Jonah allein zurück – ohnmächtig, überhört und seinem Recht auf Leben beraubt.

willkommen zu unserem animierten Kurzfilm „Zwei zu viel“ (AT).

Wir sind ein Team aus Filmschaffenden und Studierenden der Filmuniversität Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF und bitten um finanzielle Unterstützung für einen Abschlussfilm im Studiengang Animation.

Worum geht es?

Es geht um historische Aufarbeitung und Erinnerungskultur

„Euthanasie“, die staatlich angeordnete „Vernichtung lebensunwerten Lebens“ im „Dritten Reich“, ist ein an Grausamkeit und Menschenverachtung kaum zu überbietender Abschnitt der deutschen Geschichte. Ein Vergessen kann und darf es nicht geben, gerade angesichts wieder erstarkender völkischer Stimmen, nicht nur in Deutschland. Bis heute ist die öffentliche Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Thema in Deutschland nur unzureichend erfolgt. Gründe hierfür sind unter anderem die fortdauernde Stigmatisierung von Menschen mit körperlicher und geistiger Behinderung sowie eine teils vorhandene Scham in betroffenen Familien, geprägt durch den Begriff der „Rassenhygiene“.

Mit unserem Film wollen wir, soweit für uns möglich, einen Beitrag zur Enttabuisierung des Themas „Euthanasie“ leisten und die Erinnerung an die Opfer wachhalten. Angesichts aktueller gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen halten wir dies für dringend notwendig.

Es geht um Inklusion als gesellschaftliche Aufgabe

Obwohl wir heute die Ideale der Inklusion aller Menschen betonen, scheint doch der Weg zu Gleichberechtigung, Gleichwertigkeit und Teilhabe noch weit zu sein. Unser Film soll daher nicht nur ein fiktives historisches Fallbeispiel beleuchten, sondern als zeitlose Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema Inklusion verstanden werden. Wir möchten das Bewusstsein dafür schärfen, dass Inklusion nach wie vor eine zentrale Herausforderung ist und dass wir alle Verantwortung tragen, Stigmatisierung und Ausgrenzung entgegenzutreten.

Es geht um inklusives Arbeiten an der Filmuniversität Babelsberg

Um unserem Thema auch in der Produktion gerecht zu werden, legen wir großen Wert auf ein inklusives Arbeitsumfeld. Mit unserem Film möchten wir ein Zeichen setzen und andere Studierende zur Reflexion und Nachahmung anregen. Für die Hauptrolle konnten wir zwei junge Schauspieler*innen mit Downsyndrom gewinnen, die nicht nur vor der Kamera stehen, sondern die wir auch aktiv in den Entstehungsprozess des Filmes einbeziehen.

Traditionelles Schauspiel und innovative Animationstechnik

Bei der Produktion des Filmes möchten wir neue Wege des Animationsfilms erforschen. Um den Inhalt in seiner Komplexität erfassen zu können und die Geschichte zunächst „roh“, quasi unmittelbar zu erzählen, haben wir uns entschieden, den Film zunächst als echtes Theaterstück zu inszenieren.

In einem zweiten Schritt ermöglicht dann die filmische Auflösung in der Animation, das Publikum aus dem Zuschauerraum direkt auf die Bühne zu bringen. Um das Spiel der Schauspieler*innen in die digitale Welt der 3D-Animation zu übersetzen, nutzen wir das Motion Capture-Verfahren. Dafür werden die Darsteller*innen mit besonderen Anzügen ausgestattet und ihre Performance mithilfe vieler Spezialkameras aufgenommen.

Außerdem möchten wir, dass die Zuschauenden den Film in seiner Materialität und Haptik spüren können. Aus diesem Grund werden sowohl die handelnden Personen, als auch das Bühnenbild zuerst analog als Miniatur gebaut und anschließend mit dem Photogrammetrie-Verfahren digitalisiert.

Wofür brauchen wir das Geld?

Einen Film zu produzieren, ist teuer. Um unsere Vision des Films umsetzen zu können, sind wir auf Eure finanzielle Unterstützung angewiesen, gerade weil wir mit unserer besonderen Herangehensweise nicht den „klassischen“ Weg der Produktion eines Animationsfilms gehen.

Welcome to our animated short film "Zwei zu Viel (Two Too Many) " (Working Title).

We are a team of filmmakers and students from the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, and we are seeking financial support for a graduation project in the Animation program.

What is it about?

It's about confronting history and preserving memory

"Euthanasia", the state-sanctioned “annihilation of lives deemed unworthy” during the Third Reich, is one of the most cruel and dehumanizing chapters in German history. We must not and cannot forget it, especially in the face of a resurgence of nationalist rhetoric, not just in Germany, but worldwide. Public discourse around this topic remains insufficient in Germany to this day. Contributing factors include the ongoing stigmatization of people with physical and intellectual disabilities, as well as lingering shame within affected families, shaped by the ideology of “racial hygiene.”

With our film, we aim to contribute, within our means, to breaking the taboo surrounding the subject of “euthanasia” and to help preserve the memory of its victims. In light of current social developments, we believe this is more important than ever.

It's about inclusion as a social responsibility

Although we now emphasize the ideals of inclusion for all people, the road to equality still seems long. Our film not only explores a fictionalized historical case but is also meant to be a timeless engagement with the topic of inclusion. We want to raise awareness that inclusion of people with disabilities still remains a significant challenge. We believe that we all have a responsibility to confront ruling stigmas and exclusion.

It's about inclusive collaboration at the Film University Babelsberg

To do our topic justice, creating an inclusive working environment during the production is important to us. With this film, we aim to set an example and encourage fellow students, to reflect and get inspired. We are proud to have cast two young actors with Down syndrome in the lead roles. Not only are they performing in front of the camera, but they are also actively involved in the development of the film.

Traditional Acting Meets Innovative Animation Technology

In producing this film, we want to explore new approaches in animated filmmaking. To capture the complexity of the content and tell the story in its raw, immediate form, we’ve chosen to first stage the story as a live theater performance.

In the second step, animation will transform the stage play into a cinematic experience that brings the audience directly onto the stage. To translate the actors’ performances into the digital world of 3D animation, we are using motion capture technology. The actors will wear special suits, and their movements will be recorded using an array of specialized cameras.

We also want audiences to "feel" the material and texture utilized within the film. That’s why both the characters and the stage will be built as physical miniatures and then digitized using photogrammetry.

What do we need the money for?

Producing a film is expensive. In order to realize our vision, especially with our unconventional approach, we are relying on your financial support, since we’re not following the typical production route of an animated film.
