<div>Mit über 200 beteiligten Flugzeugen der Typen B-24, P-51, Me 109 und Fw 190 war es das größte Aufeinandertreffen der USAAF und der deutschen Luftwaffe. Das Gefecht endete in einem erbarmungslosen Überlebenskampf für beide Seiten.

<div>Innerhalb von nur sechs Minuten verloren 137 amerikanische und deutsche Besatzungsmitglieder ihr Leben.

<div>Von 35 gestarteten amerikanischen B-24 „Liberator“ kehrten lediglich vier Maschinen zu ihrem Stützpunkt nach Tibenham zurück. Für die USAAF gilt diese Mission bis heute als der verlustreichste Einsatz innerhalb eines einzelnen Auftrages.

<div>Am 1. August 1990 trafen sich im kleinen Ort Friedlos sieben amerikanische und deutsche überlebende Veteranen, um gemeinsam einen Gedenkstein für ihre gefallenen Kameraden zu enthüllen.

<div>Damit setzten sie nicht nur ein starkes Zeichen der Versöhnung und Freundschaft – es entstand ein weltweit einzigartiges Ehrenmal, das ehemalige Gegner auf ein und demselben Stein würdigt.

<div>Aus diesem Treffen entwickelte sich eine bis heute wachsende, generationenübergreifende Freundschaft zwischen Menschen beider Kontinente.

<div><strong>Memorial and Information Panels on the Air Battle of 27 September 1944 in the Werratal</strong>

<div>On 27 September 1944, one of the largest air battles of the Second World War took place over the Werratal between the


</div>


<div>445th Bomb Group of the USAAF and the German fighter wings

<div>Jagdgeschwader 3,

<div>Jagdgeschwader 4, and

<div>Jagdgeschwader 300.


</div>


<div>With over 200 aircraft involved — B-24s, P-51s, Me 109s, and Fw 190s — it was the largest single engagement between the USAAF and the German Luftwaffe. The battle turned into a merciless fight for survival on both sides.

<div>In just six minutes, 137 American and German aircrew lost their lives.

<div>Of the 35 B-24 “Liberators” that took off, only four returned to their base in Tibenham. To this day, the USAAF regards this mission as the single most costly operation in its history in terms of losses on one mission.

<div><strong>A Unique Global Symbol of Reconciliation</strong>

<div>On 1 August 1990, seven American and German surviving veterans met in the small village of Friedlos to jointly unveil a memorial stone for their fallen comrades.

<div>In doing so, they not only created a powerful symbol of reconciliation and friendship — they established a truly unique memorial that honours former enemies on the very same stone.


</div>


<div>This meeting gave rise to a friendship spanning generations and continents that continues to grow to this day.


</div>

<div>Traces of this battle can still be found in the Werratal. Not all American and German fallen have yet been recovered.
