We are Samantha and Thomas Briley and we are the owners of Gear Up. We’ve been working on this idea for years; as friends and family want to go on adventures but can’t afford all the equipment that some adventures require. We’ve come up with a solution that will make the outdoors more accessible to everyone: Gear Up!
What is Gear Up?
Gear Up is an outdoor adventure rental company that will deliver camping and backpacking gear right to your door or campsite in the Triangle area of North Carolina. Get going on your adventure with the peace of mind that you are using high quality and reliable gear and, then, return it either via mail or schedule a time for us to pick it up!
Want to get out and adventure but don’t have the gear? We do!
Want to try out some gear before buying it? We have it!
Something break in the middle of your trip and need a fast replacement? We’ve got you covered!
Make it to your campsite and realize you forgot a key piece of equipment? Yep, we’ve got that too!
Gear Up is also a resource in planning and learning more about camping and backpacking. We will have workshops for all types of adventures to make sure you are comfortable to take that awesome solo trip or go camping with your family for the first time.
What type of equipment will Gear Up offer?
To begin with, we’ll have camping and backpacking gear. This includes tents, sleeping bags, pads, stoves, cookware, backpacks, headlamps, lanterns, etc. Basically, we’ll have everything you need to get out camping and backpacking wherever your heart desires; whether it’s deep in the backcountry or in your own backyard. We plan on expanding our rental gear selection once Gear Up gets moving along. We’re looking at growing in three phases:
Phase 1 occurs when we open. It will be essential camping and backpacking gear.
Phase 2 will consist of paddling gear, such as kayaks, SUP boards, PFDs, dry bags, etc.
Phase 3 will launch with mountain bikes, climbing crash pads, chalk bags, etc.
Why back us up?
We have a combined 15 years of experience in the outdoor industry holding various roles including upper management, director, and guide positions. We’ve led individuals and large groups on backpacking, climbing, mountaineering, paddling, mountain bike trips, and much more.
We’ve been dreaming up the idea of Gear Up for years now because we know how hard it can be to try new adventures or just to get outside; as students and as participants who want to test out an activity before purchasing everything we need to enjoy it. We typically just end up buying the gear because there are no other options.
Just a few years ago, we moved to California from North Carolina, and on our second night in our new town all of our stuff was stolen. Our whole lives, taken from us in what probably took less than 5 minutes. Everything from our plates to our pillows. We even lost most of our wedding momentos, since we had not even been married a year at the time. But what hurt the worst was all of our outdoor gear. Pretty much everything was gone and we couldn’t enjoy what made us happy because we couldn’t afford the gear. How can you move to California, or any place that has ample outdoor activities for that matter, and not be able to enjoy the best parts of the country simply because you cannot afford to replace what was lost? It took us months and years to even begin to be able to afford tents, sleeping bags, paddles, lifejackets, climbing gear, and mountain bikes. We know first hand how hard it can be to get outside because of the high cost of entry to many outdoor activities.
We are passionate about getting outside and enjoying everything the world has to offer. We want to help everyone enjoy it too! Don’t let high equipment cost stop you from taking your kids camping for the first time, or don’t be turned off from backpacking because a backpack itself can cost so much. We got you covered!
