Raise the Sail: BYC Sailing School Fundraiser
Who We Are:
Proudly based at the Brockville Yacht Club, the BYC Sailing School is a youth and adult sailing school that has been running every summer for generations. We welcome many new youth into our eight-week day camp program every summer, with over 140 registrants for this summer alone. Our club membership proudly sponsors a number of youth sailors who otherwise could not afford a sailing experience. Additionally, our race team includes many young athletes who compete at sailing regattas across the province. We love to see the returning sailors each summer, and the many new faces that join the program.
Challenges We Face:
Due to such interest, our sailing school has seen significant growth over the past few years. Part of this success can be attributed to our commitment to keep camp fees very affordable for parents and has allowed young sailors to come back year after year. With this increased demand for our program, we are finding new challenges in providing the boats and equipment needed to deliver all that BYC Sailing School can offer. With up to 40 years wear and tear, much of our equipment has become so old that it is unserviceable which has limited our ability to further our growth, increase our program size, and shape the next generation of sailors.
Our sailing school uses a variety of dinghy sailboats to deliver our programs, including Club 420s, lasers, optimists, and topazes. However, we have been unable to meet the number of boats required by our expanding sailing school.
Our Goal:
To help us develop our program further and offer an enhanced sailing experience, we have created a goal to fundraise $20,000 from the community to purchase new dinghies to add into our fleet. We are fortunate to have had a club member approach us who has offered to match the final amount reached of this fundraiser. Given this generosity, we hope to come out of this fundraiser with a total of $40,000 which can provide us with at least three new Club 420 sailboats as well as additional equipment and important resources such as sails, rudders, and dollies.
With such an ambitious fundraising goal, donations of any size are very much appreciated and will be recognized by the sailing school. We have also created a tiered system of donations to show our appreciation for such support. If you have reached one of the tiered levels of donations, your name will be engraved on a plaque to be hung in the sailing school for all of our members and sailors to see. Additionally, we have created the Platinum Sail level for potential corporate sponsorships. Platinum Sail donations are eligible to display a company logo on our boat which will travel around Ontario and Quebec for many regattas over the next decade.

It is extremely important that we make a strong effort in achieving this fundraising goal as the result would dramatically improve our current sailing school conditions. More boats means more sailors! We cannot forget the impact our sailing school has on our youth in Brockville. Our programs build confidence, leadership, problem-solving skills, and overall self-development via a unique on-water experience that will be remembered for a lifetime.
