<div><strong>Who we are</strong>: We are the Black Doula Project (BDP); a non-profit dedicated to reducing the maternal health risk and mortality rates of black women by providing grants of up to $1,000 for black families to utilize birth and postpartum doulas for their maternal care.

<div><strong>What we need</strong>: We are raising funds for a few things: (1) to expand the geographical market of our grantees so we can cover the doula fees for more black parents (currently, we are only providing grants to birthing parents in Baltimore, MD and Washington. D.C markets), (2) to increase the grant awards from $1,000 to $1,500 and (3) to cover the administrative fees of running our fund.

<div><strong>What is a Doula? </strong>A doula is a person who provides continuous emotional, informational and physical support before, during, and just after birth. Clinical studies show that the presence of a doula at birth tends to result in shorter labors with fewer complications, fewer interventions, greater success with breastfeeding, and an overall feeling of more positive birth.

<div><strong>Why Black Women? </strong>Black women dying due to maternal complications is not just a sad story; it is a public health emergency. The facts are:

<ul>
<li>Black women are three to four times more likely to die from childbirth related complications when compared to white women
</li>
<li>Infants born to black mothers are dying at two times the rate as infants born to non-Hispanic white mothers.
</li>
<li>No matter the education level or socioeconomic status of the black mother, these two facts hold true.
</li>

<div>The BDP recognizes the need to advocate, support and protect our black women; we proudly work to help care for black women and black families as they transition into a new stage of life called parenthood.
