This is my son Mouriss's story. Mouriss is a refugee from Sudan. Mouriss's family fled the war and genocide in Sudan when he was just 2 years old. They lived in a refugee camp in Egypt until he was 12 when they came to the United States as refugees seeking a better life.
We came to know Mouriss in 2009 when his family moved to Olathe, KS. He became friends with my son, Logan, and was at our house all the time. We quickly became attached to him, he had such a gentle kind heart. His mother was having some difficulties financially and ended up moving to Utah to get a fresh start. This was a very tough time for Mouriss and his family. We ended up buying him a plane ticket and flying him back to Kansas City so he could finish school here, with his friends. Mouriss has been part of our family ever since. He just turned 21 in July.
Mouriss has had a really tough past, life in the refugee camp was rough. Adapting to life in the US wasn't easy either. He struggled to surround himself with good positive friends and hasn't always made the best choices. As a result, he has been in some trouble but nothing to deserve the consequences that he is currently facing.
On September 1st, Mouriss was detained by immigration. He has been held in immigration jail ever since. They are trying to deport him to Sudan. This is a country he doesn't know. He no longer has family there. Sending him back is a death sentence. I don't want to go into too much graphic detail but Sudan is an Arabic country where Christians are hanged or crucified still to this day. Rape as a form of genocide is still going on in Darfur, a region of Sudan. Sudan has ISIS and other terrorist groups. He would surely be executed the moment he stepped foot in that country.
Sudan has recently become a hot button political bargaining chip for the US. The Sudanese government has started to cooperate with our ISIS investigations and as a result, it has been removed from our list of travel ban countries. As of last Friday, the temporary (20 years old) protected status for refugees from Sudan ended. There is now a short one year period for them to either establish permanent status in the US or be deported. The US sanctions against Sudan are also up for review October 12th. The human rights violations in Sudan have not improved. I am not wanting to talk politics instead I am only telling you this because I can't let Mouriss be a casualty of our war on terror. He was never the intended target, only collateral damage. He is a human being, he is my son.
We are fighting to save his life! We have retained an amazing lawyer that is going to help us through this process but the legal fees are very expensive. I always heard growing up that it takes a village to raise a child and it has never been more true than now. We need your help! Patrick and I do not have the funds to fight this on our own. We are already struggling and the fight just started. If you could please help out, even if it just a small amount, it would go a long way to help us save our son.
