Gay4U is open at 380 15th Street, hooray! Though Hella Vegan Eats as a duo could not make it after the displacement, I have strived to carry as many of the elements that made the business and food into such a magical place into Gay4U:)
My name is Sofi Espice, I moved to Oakland in July 2009 and immediately start sell tamales at art markets and underground food events. The business took off and Hella Vegan Eats was a pivotal part of the diy to brick-n-mortar landscape of the SF Bay Area for the past 10 years. Through displacement from Classic Cars West after 3 years of service my ex-business partner and I split ways and I started Gay4U. The amazing people at Garden House and Aburaya have enabled my business to start anew:)
I am a brown first generation trans woman. I have been through it and am here to inspire, learn, bring joy and alway strive to do my best and be better then yesterday. I have made it a point to share profits I’ve made from Gay4U to trans and lgbtqi+ organizations as well as hand delivered foods to people in the encampments of downtown and West Oakland as well as primarily hired folk from the trans poc community. Trans POC always eat free!
I have gone through all my capital starting this business and am I dire need for help from the community through this campaign and from gettting the word out about the restaurant:)
I hope to be so lucky to get the 5k as it would enable this business to make it through the end of the year and would be amazed to see the campaign reach 10k to secure longevity and be able to hold onto the prep kitchen I use and anything further to enable the business to grow in significant ways such as through merchandise and the ability to hire experienced employees.
Gay4U Open 4 night and for weekend brunch in beautiful downtown Oakland at the recently opened Garden House/Aburaya location on 15th Street, blocks away from BART and city hall.
