Community Dock Raising

For generations Gay Fish Company has been a cherished part of the community on St, Helena Island, as locals and the many tourists and part-timers passing by stop in for fresh, local seafood.  Customers filing through in the line can be heard catching up on local news and gossip, discussing vacation plans and chatting with several generations of the Gay family working behind the counter.   The docks right outside the door are lined with working shrimp boats which come and go through the Harbor River bridge.

Those docks have taken a mighty hit from Hurricanes Matthew and Irma in recent years which have left them unsafe and in serious need of repair.   The subject came up as a local dock builder and a building supply company employee were enjoying burgers and beers with their wives at the Fillin' Station on Lady's Island.  The couples decided to throw a dock-raising to help the Gays get the docks back in shape before the opening of shrimp season this year.

The majority of the labor will be donated most of the supplies purchased at cost.  We hope that the community of locals and visitors who have been  customers over the years will pitch in the money needed to fund this project.  All expenses will be documented and posted on this site for those who donate to review.  We hope to begin in the next few weeks and will plan to work in 20ft sections eventually covering the100 feet of dock.  The cost per section is estimated to be $2100.

An account for this project has been established at Regions Bank on Lady's Island.  The account is in my name ("Sissy" Sarah Caroline Califf) and my husband's name ("Moe" John Phifer) with Gay Fish Dock-Raising in the Account Description.  The two of us are authorized to make transactions on that account.  We plan to use the money deposited from GoFundMe to pay for the supplies and expenses associated with the dock repairs.  If there is money left when the docks are finished that will be used for repairs needed to the building/freezers/icemakers/etc.  A strict accounting of all expenditures will be maintained.  We will post updates on expenses on this site and  be glad to share any information regarding expenses with donors.

This idea was entirely conceived and proposed by friends of the Gay family.  The Gays have not asked for, nor did they expect any help from anyone in getting these repairs completed.   We are aware that the property is listed for sale.  Whether it sells or stays with the Gay family (our hope!), shrimping season is quickly approaching and the docks need to be safe.

Please help us help this local treasure.  Every little bit counts and will be very much appreciated!http://www.islandpacket.com/news/local/community/beaufort-news/article200951624.html
