Gary Lopinto's Cancer Fund

Gary Lopinto was a 38 year veteran of the Louisiana Department of Health in the Commercial Seafood Division and was forced to abruptly retire on December 21st, 2017 due to the following events:

"On December 14, 2017 while at a routine doctor visit for swelling in my left leg and foot it was discovered that I had blood clots in my left leg call DVT (deep vain thrombosis). I was placed on a blood thinner with instructions that if I had pain in my upper back an emergency room visit was required because a clot could have broken loose and traveled to my lungs. This could cause a pulmonary embolism which was potentially life threatening.

On December 17, 2017 due to pain in my upper back, my wife and I visited the emergency room.  A chest X-ray and a CAT scan of my upper abdomen were taken. While there was no pulmonary embolism, the emergency room doctor said the test showed lesions in my liver and swollen lymph nodes in my chest. The emergency room doctor's opinion was that there was cancer coming from somewhere in my body. I was admitted to the hospital. Extensive testing on December 18th revealed a tumor in my pancreas, numerous lesions in my liver, and the beginning of tumors in my right lung. The doctors at EJ hospital concluded that there was a high probablity of pancreatic cancer that had spread to other oragns.

I began consultaion with MD Anderson hospital in Houston on December 27, 2017. Three visits to MD Anderson between December 27th and January the 8th confirmed that it was in fact stage 4 pancreatic cancer as proven by a biopsy of my liver.

The doctors at MD Anderson informed me that my condition was potentially treatable, but not curable. Because the cancer had evacuated the pancreas. The  oncologist at MD Anderson and the oncologist at EJ Hosptial agreed that the best potential treatment would be chemotherapy.

Several complications arouse which delayed the beginning of my chemo therapy treatment.

Finally, chemo therapy started on Valentines day of 2018. I have had a total of 3 treatments so far which last 6 and half hours per treatment, and are very difficult to recover from.  At least 4 more treatments are scheduled prior to a CAT scan. These will reveal if the chemo therapy is working on the tumor. Further treatment will be based on the result of that CAT scan."

All donations are greatly appreciated during this difficult time. Treatments will be on going for the forseable future. Any dontaiton big, or small will be of great help.

Thank you for your time, love, and prayers during this time.
