Go Fund Me Campaign

“Most people do not realize how many individuals are fine one day and paralyzed the next. We did not know this until this happened to our son. You learn to never take anything for granted.”

Ralph and Jane Lake (Garry’s parents)

Garry Lake is a 62-year-old quadriplegic who was injured in a diving accident when he was 16 years old, just one week before starting his Junior year of high school. He is paralyzed from 8 inches below his neckline and cannot move his fingers, legs, or torso. After 25 years of marriage Garry went through a divorce that forced him to move in with his 88-year-old father before finding the walk out basement that he has rented for the past 4 years. Garry is a smart, innovative, faith filled man that has overcome many difficult obstacles in his life. One of Garry’s largest obstacles is finding ways to pay for his ongoing medical expenses. He has reached out to multiple government programs, charitable foundations, local churches, nursing schools and other organizations to find avenues of assistance available to him; He maintains a job at Walmart and receives support from his friends and family; he lives a very meager lifestyle and only wishes to maintain this. But, despite all this his expenses are still larger than his income. I have sat down with Garry and reviewed his current budget and income to realize that he is short roughly $20,000 a year. If Garry does not find ways to come up with this additional funding he will be forced to move from his home into an institutionalized nursing home.

There have been many studies done showing that Nursing homes are not able to administer genuine care to individuals with Garry’s disability. You can read more about this in an article by Chris Orestis called Life Expectancy Compression: Effects on Longevity After Moving into an LTC Facility.

The goal of this Go Fund Me campaign is to help Garry bridge this gap in funding allowing him to maintain self-sufficiency through this period of his life until he can find other means of bridging this gap in funding.

If you are unable to give money, donating your time to help with his many needs would be welcome. All type of help is welcome, cooking, cleaning, handyman, computer, driving or running errands etc, anyone could pitch in to help.

Garry, with one of his Caregivers Mona.

Caregivers are by far the largest ongoing expense that Garry has. If Garry is unable to schedule or cannot afford caregivers to get him out of bed in the morning and into bed at night then he spends all day in his bed. It is not uncommon for Garry to spend multiple days in a row in bed.

Garry is a lifelong St. Louis Resident and has lived in Florissant since he was 13. He is a member of Salem Free Evangelical Church on New Halls Ferry where he attends a  bi-weekly men ’s bible study and peruses his passion for youth ministry.

All money raised will go towards Garry Lake's “Special Needs Trust”  which must be used to cover the cost of Garry's daily medical, and personal needs. This trust is administrated by AR Care located in Kansas City MO for further information please contact Jana Odom with the contact info below.
