Family and friends, I am starting this campaign for dear friends of mine, Gary & Diana Lavenia who reside in Middlesex, NJ. Many of you know them and their children Lisa, Gary Jr., Sal, and Mike. What some of you may not know is that in early August Gary was diagnosed with a very bad heart problem and was immediately send to Morristown Memorial Hospital for quadruple by-pass surgery. Amazingly he came through that surgery and has healed there quite well.
A few days after the surgery while recovering, Gary started to have pain and coldness in his left leg. When the pain became unbearable the nurses investigated. It was discovered that there was no pulse in his left foot. He was rushed into emergency surgery where they proceded to slice both sides of his leg to remove clotting, infection, dead muscle and tissue, and to allow oxygen back in. The incision was left open for drainage and has remained open to this day. The condition in his leg has continued to decline with 6 surgeries now being performed to date, removing dead muscle and tissue. He has been in the hospital now for 4 weeks and almost the entire calf muscle is gone. As it stands right now, he will never be able to walk the same. But worse yet there is a possibility that he may lose his leg below the knee. Every day has become a fight to save it. There has been some healing but not enough to close the wound and do some skin grafting. Decisions will be made in the next few days on how to move forward.
Meanwhile, Gary who provides the main income to the family is receiving disability. Diana hasn't been able to go back to her full time job at a daycare center because she needs to be by his side as the outcome changes daily. Their financial situation is declining rapidly and they just can’t keep up. Gary’s recovery and rehab, whatever the outcome, will be extremely hard and long. There is no way to even know if he will ever be able to work again. So, I am asking everyone for some help to keep their home intact and to help elevate some of the immediate financial burden and medical costs not covered by insurance. Gary, Diana and family wish to convey their heartfelt appreciation for all of those who have continued to pray, sent words of encouragement and participated in the food train.
