Hello, my name is Galina, and I would like to share with you a story about my dear younger sister Lena.
She is battling a fatal disease known as ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.
This disease is ugly and merciless. At this time, there is no known cure for this deadly disease.
In February of 2015 we received her diagnosis. Since then we have been living with that terrifying feeling that she might pass away soon.
My sister means the world to me and her family - she is my closest living relative aside from my daughter and truly my best friend. The reality of this disease is that it will eventually take my sister’s life and she will not live long enough to see her grandchildren. We deal with this reality as a family every day now. Lena is already losing all of her motor abilities.
My neice Alla had to quit her job to take care of her mother. The only family income is coming from my brother-in-law Volodya, who is working at the day time and taking care of his wife at nights. Ha has to work without days off to support his family and pay the bills and mortgage, but that is not enough.
Besides the medications, the intense physical therapy and massages every day can decrease the pain and prolong her life and ability to move.
As you can imagine, I am willing to take all measures and spend as much as I can to help my dear sister live as comfortably as possible for as long as she possibly can, but the financial burden is overwhelming - with having spent thousands of dollars already.
I would greatly appreciate any donations towards this cause - no matter how small or big, any amount will help tremendously. We do not know what the future holds, or how long time we have, so every day we cherish the time we get spend together to the fullest.
