***Galentine's Day is BACK for 2018, and we are aiming to create a bigger and better event to provide gifts and a fun day to even more wonderful women!***
Valentine’s Day can be a time to find joy in the love you share with another, or to celebrate your single status by indulging in self-care. Yet for many of our community members, neither of these are an option.
Imagine being reminded of happy couples while you’re trying to escape an abusive relationship. What if you could barely afford food, let alone to treat yourself to a fancy box of sweets when you’re feeling down?
Every woman deserves to feel special, loved, and celebrated. Through the giving and receiving of special, “just because” gifts, we hope to connect women across the city in the spirit of sweetness and love. We believe that the receiving of these small pleasures helps a person to feel cared for, and elevates their overall sense of self-worth.
We recognize the importance of resources and funds to provide the basics to those in need. But on this one day of the year, we choose to raise funds to provide something special - above and beyond the basic human needs - to our city’s vulnerable women.
Since 2015, we've partnered with one or more of Winnipeg's worthy women's centres on or around Valentine's Day, providing sweets, treats, and feel-good movies. In 2017, we held the first-ever Galentine's Day event: a day of community caring and sharing at the North End Women's Centre. We provided lunch and gift bags, as well as welcomed guests to enjoy esthetics services, massages, and a movie screening.
Our plan for 2018 is to expand the event even further: we will host a self-care extravaganza for the women of Winnipeg's North End at a larger venue where we can welcome even more deserving guests!
You can help us by making a donation. One hundred per cent of our proceeds (minus GoFundMe admin fees) will go towards candy, movies, a delicious lunch, and sturdy reusable tote bags that will be given out at the event.
*Don't forget!* Everyone who donates $15 or more will receive a Galentine's Day enamel pin as a thank you! (Shipping costs are included in the $15.) Pins are currently in production and are expected to ship late December.
