This is my nephew, Gael Montalvo, a 9 year old twin with a kind and gentle heart. He was accepted to the Saturn V STEM program at Pfluger Elementary this year and is destined to be an engineer one day!
On August 3rd, during a routine eye exam, Gael's optometrist discovered he had swollen optic nerves. She insisted they immediately get him examined at Dell Children's hospital. An MRI revealed swelling and a mass on the left side of his brain, and he underwent emergency brain surgery less than 48 hours later to remove an abscess.
My nephew & his family spent the next 7 days at Dell, while doctors tried to discover the source of infection. With a drain tube in his skull, he underwent multiple MRI's, Echo's, scopes, and blood tests. Despite their best efforts,the doctors could not identify the cause of the infection. However, Gael responded well to treatment, and was released home with a PICC line for 6 weeks of intravenous antibiotic treatment.
By the grace of God, this infection was detected before it progressed to infecting his entire brain and bloodstream, and this sweet boy gets to celebrate his 10th birthday and start 4th grade in a couple of weeks. Now the family is faced with unexpected medical bills, that continue to add-up. The brain surgery and week in Pediatric ICU will cost close to $7000, and the medicine alone is $3,000. Once the antibiotic therapy is complete he will return to Dell for another MRI & battery of tests, to ensure the infection is clear.
Obviously, this has put an incredible amount of stress on the family, both emotional and financial. We are asking our generous community of family and friends to help, in any way they can, so that Gael and his twin, Gabriella, can go back-to-school shopping and celebrate their 10th birthday, as the family begins the long road of re-paying these medical expenses.
