Gabrielito

I spent last month visiting my family in Guatemala!  I was excited to see everybody but I couldn’t wait to spend sometime with little Gabriel, my 2-year-old nephew.  Everything went well the first week and I loved seeing him running, jumping, dancing and being a happy kid.  Then, one day, suddenly he started crying and complaining about pain in his neck and sometimes his shoulder.  After a couple of visits with his pediatrician he was referred to a neurologist, who asked my sister to get several test including blood samples, two MRIs, and neurological tests.  That same day, his parents went to get the results and they were shocked to hear that the doctors had found a tumor on his spinal cord and that he needed to have an emergency surgery, to remove the tumor and perform a biopsy.  Gabriel had his surgery on Thursday August 2nd and it lasted more than 5 hours. The doctors got rid of the tumor, which had already extended to his arm (which has had reduced mobility for a couple of weeks now).  Because of his condition he had to have the surgery in a private hospital equipped for intensive care, making it imposible for my sister to put together the necessary funds which total more than 60,000 quetzales (around $8,000).  Between family and friends they have raised some of the money but are still in need of more to be able to keep paying his medical bills.  I love this kid with all my heart and I would really appreciate any contribution to help make my sister’s road a little less painful.
