Dear Friends and Supporters,

My name is Gabriela, and I’m a wife and mother of five. My family and I moved from Germany to the United States so my husband could pursue his law degree. We were excited to start a new chapter, but life took a challenging turn.

Shortly after arriving, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and hypothyroidism, and during a routine check-up, a spot on my neck turned out to be melanoma, a dangerous form of skin cancer. I had surgery to remove the cancer, but my journey is far from over.

I am still treating the cancer and need to have more moles removed and biopsied. My skin continues to struggle with infections, and the inflammation from Hashimoto’s is affecting my entire body. I’m also managing pre-diabetes, osteopenia, and anemia, as well as undergoing tests to understand issues with my liver and stomach. Doctors are trying to figure out why I’m still unable to absorb essential nutrients like Vitamin D, Vitamin B, and calcium.

Unfortunately, this all happened while we were without health insurance for six months. We later discovered that Eduardo’s university had cut our insurance, and by the time we were able to get a new plan in September, it was too late—we were already drowning in medical bills.

We have been paying for all my cancer treatments, surgeries, and ongoing exams out of pocket. Despite asking for reductions, the costs have only grown, and my need for continued care, including biopsies, skin treatments, and tests for liver and stomach issues, has created a snowball effect. While Eduardo’s internship salary helps, it isn’t enough to cover the medical expenses, cost of living, insurance, and late bills.

Despite all of this, I am keeping faith that these challenges will pass, and I believe brighter days are ahead. Right now, though, we simply cannot afford all the medical bills, treatments, and tests.
