Nuestra historia:
A los 12 años, Gabby montaba su bicicleta como cualquier otro día. Perdió el control y se cayó, lesionándose la pierna. No hubo fractura y los médicos no pudieron encontrar una causa para el terrible dolor y la hinchazón que estaba experimentando.
El dolor continuó sin explicación, y los problemas para usar su pierna provocaron más accidentes y caídas. En los meses siguientes, varios especialistas la vieron y finalmente le diagnosticaron el síndrome de dolor regional complejo (CRPS, por sus siglas en inglés). CRPS es una condición de dolor crónico causada por daño al sistema nervioso. El cerebro indica a los nervios que hay una lesión cuando no existe, pero el dolor se siente de igual manera. Es un dolor inexplicable que ni siquiera se compara a una amputacion. A veces puede sobrepasar los niveles de dolor establecidos (1-10) y puede llegar a alcanzar un 11, 12,13 y hasta 14. (Lo llaman el syndrome del suicidio porque en muchos casos les quita el deseo de seguir viviendo.)
Como resultado de CRPS, Gabby tuvo parálisis temporal en sus brazos. Ella necesitaba terapia física y ocupacional para aprender a caminar normalmente y para recuperar el uso de sus brazos y manos. Y terapia de biorretroalimentación para aprender a lidiar con el dolor agudo y punzante que enfrenta a diario.
Nuestra niña alguna vez feliz, enérgica, dulce y llena de sueños, ahora estaba confinada a un estilo de vida muy limitado. PERO HAY ESPERANZA . Después de 8 años, hemos encontrado un programa de tratamiento en Fayetteville, Arkansas llamado The Neurologic Relief Center. Están ayudando a las personas con CRPS a no sentir dolor y oramos a Dios que lo mismo sea cierto para Gabby.
Estamos pidiendo su ayuda para que Gabby reciba este tratamiento potencialmente cambiante para su futuro. El costo del tratamiento de diez semanas es de $ 18,000. Our story:
At 12 years old, Gabby was riding her bike like any other day. She lost control and had a fall, injuring her leg. There was no fracture and doctors couldn’t find a cause for the terrible pain and swelling she was experiencing.
The pain continued with no explanation, and trouble using her leg led to more accidents and falls. Over the next months she was seen by several specialists and eventually diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). CRPS is a chronic pain condition caused by damage to the nervous system. The brain signals to the nerves that there is an injury when none exists but the pain is felt nonetheless.
As a result of CRPS, Gabby had temporary paralysis in her arms. She needed physical and occupational therapy to learn to walk normally and to regain use of her arms and hands. And biofeedback therapy to learn to cope with the sharp, stabbing pain she faces on a daily basis.
Our once happy, energetic, sweet and full of dreams girl was now confined to a very limited lifestyle. She wasn’t able to attend a regular school, and against all odds and with a lot of effort she was able to graduate High School. But Gabby’s dreams of a career, having a job and feeling productive were vanished by her condition.
Normal activities are difficult for Gabby: eating, sleeping, showering, getting dressed. Any physical contact with clothing items, temperature changes, wind or even a hug can be incredibly painful. Fatigue, stress even crying or laughing can make the pain unbearable to the point of desperation. Our whole family has been affected because even though we are not physically hurting, our hearts hurt to see her suffer.
But there is hope. After 8 years we have found a treatment program in Fayetteville, Arkansas called The Neurologic Relief Center. They are helping people with CRPS to be pain free and we pray the same will be true for Gabby.
We are asking for your help in getting Gabby this potentially life-changing treatment. The cost for the ten-week treatment is $18,000. This includes balancing the autonomic nervous system, decreasing inflammation, and neuromuscular re-education therapy. As it is based in Arkansas, we also have travel and accommodation expenses so that Gabby has someone there to support her and get her to her appointments.
