Gabe Tyler is a 7th grade student at Nativity of Our Lord School. He is the oldest son of Jacob and Teresa Tyler, and has four siblings: Sophia, Vincent, Gina, and baby Anthony (due any day). Gabe likes to hang out with his friends, play Xbox games, and be active. When he’s not rooting for the Broncos, he likes to play football and baseball, and go swimming. Gabe is an excellent student and his favorite subject is math. He's your typical healthy 7th grade boy, with one exception.

On Friday, December 15th, Gabe was at school playing football during recess when he had a seizure. Thanks to the quick-thinking teachers on duty, his helpful friends, and the knowledgeable EMT's, he was quickly escorted in an ambulance to the local hospital. Gabe’s parents met him at the hospital where he recovered from the seizure and started some tests to find the cause of the seizure. A few hours later, Gabe was transferred to Children's hospital for further testing. After many tests and lots of waiting, the doctors confirmed the cause of Gabe’s seizure: a tumor in his right frontal lobe. The silver lining to this tragic news is that the tumor is contained, operable, has not spread, is not near any major nerves, and is not causing any major problems.

Gabe was released from Children’s hospital on Sunday afternoon and is resting comfortably at home with his family. His brain surgery to remove the tumor is scheduled for the day after Christmas, and the family is hoping baby Anthony will wait to arrive until after the surgery. This week will be busy with pre-op visits and MRI’s to watch the tumor’s growth. The nature of the tumor will not be known until after it’s been removed and assessed by pathology. It is likely that Gabe will need physical therapy after the surgery for some deficits on his left side, but the extent of this can’t be known until after the surgery is over.

A situation like this is every parent’s worst nightmare, and the Tylers are handling it with a deep well of love, grace, and patience. All they have asked for during this difficult time is the prayers of their family, friends, and community. They ask that we continue to pray for Gabe, his medical team, a successful surgery, and a quick recovery. During a crisis like this, cost is no object; the parents’ only concern is for the well-being of their child. However, down the road, when the realities of medical bills start arriving in the mail, the expense will continue to add stress and difficulty to an already challenging time.

If you are able to contribute any amount, no matter how big or small, to Gabe’s medical fund, his family will be forever grateful. Let us come together as a school, a parish, and a community and help a family in need of not only our continued prayers, but also our generosity.
