Our 12-year-old son Gabe has been suffering from several health conditions for many years. He was hospitalized last year for over two months, and as of last night he has been hospitalized once again. At this time, we are not sure how long he will be hospitalized, but we know that the care he requires is not simple or short-term.
Thus far, we have been unable to obtain most of the care he needs because he does not qualify for Medicaid due to our income. Most of the services he desperately needs do not serve anyone unless they have Medicaid. Because of this, his condition has been deteriorating despite our best efforts.
In order to qualify for Medicaid here in NC, we need to meet a deductible of $35,000 for every six month period we want him to have Medicaid. He is covered under our private insurance, but that plan is a high-deductible plan with an even higher out-of-pocket maximum - and then he would be ineligible for most of the services he needs.
Right now we are focused on figuring out how to pay for his hospitalization. The last time he was hospitalized, the cost was over $1600/day. As of right now, we expect him to be hospitalized for at least a week, which would already cost over $11,000. We hate having to ask for help, but at this point we could go into foreclosure if we don't end up receiving assistance. I already work two jobs, and we still live paycheck to paycheck.
