Help Us Have a Permanent Home! <iframe media_type="0" media_id="BObJS8Vtgo4" class="youtube-replace" title="YouTube video player" style="margin-bottom:20px;width:560px;height:315px;" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/BObJS8Vtgo4/?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="1"></iframe> Jajja’s Kids began simply in 2006 with the gift of a cell phone to a young Ugandan man counseling kids living on the street in Kampala, Uganda. Today Jajja’s Kids has a home for 20 former street children who live together, are lovingly cared for and receive a formal education. Before coming to our program, these children were among tens of thousands of street children not in school and living without adults guiding them. Currently, our 20 children, ages 9 to 19, live in a rented house that is no longer large enough for them as they grow into teenagers. And a rental, rather than a permanently owned home, lacks the stability that these children desperately need. They deserve to have a safe place to live—with ready access to meals, sleeping quarters, adult guidance, and without the fear of being kicked out by a landlord to live on the street again. <iframe media_type="0" media_id="qz28eK_8Oto" class="youtube-replace" title="YouTube video player" style="margin-bottom:20px;width:560px;height:315px;" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/qz28eK_8Oto/?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="1"></iframe> To best meet the needs of the children we serve, in January 2019 we purchased a partially built house. We’ve spent $103,000 so far on buying the property and making renovations that have included: fixing the roof, building walls, installing windows and doors, repairing the sewer system, installing electricity, and building a secure wall around the property. Completing the wall was the first priority, because it assures that the property and the people occupying it will be safe from harm. We don’t have enough funds to complete the renovations and establish the home to best suit the children’s needs. We’re seeking $25,000 (previously $50,000) in donations that will: finish the walls inside and out, complete the kitchen and bathrooms, create a garden area for the children to grow fruits and vegetables, and install a government-required security system. We also need to buy books and a desktop computer for the children’s library, as well as much-needed furniture to equip and complete the house for 20 children and a staff of six.
