My name is Donna, and this little boy is my grandson, Orlando. He and I have been on our own since he was an infant and now he’s 11. When I took emergency custody of him I felt confident we'd be fine but there have been so many losses and challenges, including some congenital health issues for him and some major health issues for me and now we are facing another huge hurdle.
I’m a photographer and have been working at Disney here in Fl but was out on medical leave for neurovascular disease complications. Just as I was getting my checkups to go back to work, my doctors informed me I have been re-diagnosed with breast cancer, I felt the bottom of my world crumbling beneath me!!!
As an 8 year survivor I know full well what's ahead of me, physically, emotionally and financially! The first time I had breast cancer Orlando was 3 but he is older now and understands more. He knows I am facing something big and he's also scared ... I am all he has.
My biggest stress is how to keep us afloat financially, stay in our home, and provide necessities for Orlando.
I had already fallen behind with my mortgage during my recent medical leave for the neurovascular complications and the bank is already calling with collections for those payments.
Paying the back mortgage payments is now my most urgent need as my income in the months to come is also a question as I face surgery and treatment. I need to keep this roof over our heads! I will continue to establish future work in my studio, as well as continue to find ways to supplement my income as we make our way through this latest set-back. When I’m able, I’ll also pick up part-time photography shifts at Disney. We just need a little boost.
I am frightened and overwhelmed by how I can possible make ends meet in the months to come as I go through the needed breast cancer treatments. We have no family to turn to and we’re reaching out asking for help in keeping our home. Orlando has lived here with me all his life and this has been my home for almost 25 years. I don’t know where else we could go at this point!
It would mean the world to us to know we're not alone, that there are people who can understand our dilemma and help us meet our goal to keep our home.
