Next we are going to aim for scheduling more demos at a farmers market we do at Lavizzo Elemantary School in the Roseland neighborhood and Johnson School of Excellence in North Lawndale. These markets start end of August!

Hola! My name is Eric Rodriguez and I work for an organization called The Urban Canopy . We grow food, distribute food and make compost to create a local food cycle. We participate in farmers markets throughout Chicago and this year we want to host more chef demos at 7 (not 5, I forgot some CPS markets we start later in the season!) of our markets (see below) in so-called "food deserts".
Why?
Because we see that it works wonders to have chefs hand out samples of food they've prepared right off our table. We have seen these demos have a huge impact in people taking raw food home to cook, recurring attendance, and our chefs really like doing them so its a win-win-win.
Communities that have been neglected and disenfranchised struggle to access natural, organic food, let alone local food. Most folks that buy raw foods know how to cook them but a generation (or two) of people are growing up with little to no education on cooking from scratch; creating a disconnect from the food that builds healthy minds and bodies. This is where very important people have a role to fill; engaging and leading the way by example.

Ramona Baptiste, a.k.a. Chef In The Hood, is devoting her life to spark the love of cooking in the hearts of the people she meets. She shows folks attending farmer's markets what to do with the myriad of vegetables local farms produce, demystifying the process of making delicious food from raw vegetables.
She has a lot of love for food and we want her to share her passion with the community.
Airrishaun Sykes is another one of our chefs. He believes food to be something crucial to changing our community and guiding our youth. Just in his early 20's he has developed his own food business and is in process of opening his first restaurant, The Hunger Hideout . We want him to share his passion with the community. Check him out in action in the video at the top!
Chesa Rollins is another entrepreneur changing the food-scape in chicago. After developing sensitivity to gluten products, she found little options for her. She believes alternative options are crucial in every community and started her own food truck business called Chesa's Gluten Tootin' Free Food Truck . We want her to share her passion for food with the community.
Longterm
We want to make chef's a sustainable fixture to these markets and we believe we can achieve this by having our chefs form connections with the market community as well as paying them for their time. Chefs and people passionate about food will be crucial to the development of these markets.
***We of course leave the door open for other chefs to share their skills and love for food through the markets. If you are interested in doing demos, contact us!***
Costs Breakdown Per Demo:
$50 supplies compostable plates, oils, etc.
$50 worth of food supplied by The Urban Canopy
$100 for the chef's time
Your Funds Will Contribute To 7 City of Chicago Market Sites in 2017:
1. Englewood/Anchor House Market
2. Bronzeville Market
3. Colombus Park Market
4. La Follette Park Market
5. Austin Market
6. Lavizzo Elemntary School Market in Roseland
7. Johnson School of Excellence Market in N. Lawndale
We want to do 5 additional chef demos at each market
for a total of 25 more demos in 2017

25 demos x $200 per demo
$5,000 in total funds needed
We at The Urban Canopy, are so eager to have more demos that will be asking chefs to do more ASAP -- before the campaign is done. We hope the campaign pays us back for funding these demos at the end of the 2017 summer season! Come check them out! Contact me for more details.
