Matthias and the Home Stretch

The home stretch is often just that—a hard ultimate end of a journey, performed when your energy and motivation may be at their lowest. We can see that the end is in sight, but even though the distance may be short, it seems so long. What do we need to help us with this emotional and physical struggle? Sometimes sustenance, maybe a pep talk, and certainly the support of those we love.

 I think of Matthias, fighting an unwinnable struggle with metastatic prostate cancer. He’s in his comfortable home, with his beloved faithful dogs, spending time in a hospital bed centered in such a way so he can be in the midst of his small universe. He is at a point where he cannot be left alone because he needs help with medications and getting up and about. The only thing missing is the constant presence of his wife Sue, cheering him up and easing his struggle as he sees that last part of the battle looming.

 We all want to be surrounded by our comforts and loved ones in the home stretch. If only this could always happen. There are the logistics of daily life—going to work to earn enough money to pay bills, going out to get groceries, taking the dogs for a walk.  Unfortunately, Sue has to work since she does not have enough family leave time to be able to spend time with Matthias.
