Keeping Nate Great

Thank you for visiting our page. Our adorable boy was recently diagnosed with a Nephrotic Syndrome. His condition is a steriod resistant form of Minimal Change Disease. With MCD, in most cases, the patient takes high doses of steriods that allow the child to reach remission. Unfortunately for our Nate, after 9 weeks of steriods and 2 hospital stays it was determined that steriods were not working to improve his condition. His condition currently has no cure and they are unsure of the causes as well. We are currently trying out a new medication for him to try to keep his kidneys functioning as well as possible and to keep them from leaking protein into his urine and bloodstream, which he seems to be responding very well to. He takes 5 medications a day, some twice a day in order to keep him as healthy as possible. His condition has many side effects as well. He is very tired, can easily form blood clots, but most importantly he is very susceptible to infection. For this reason he has been unable to attend school since his diagnosis. In his case when his body senses infection it attacks his kidneys instead of the infection. While relapsing he suffers from extreme edema and high blood pressure. We are always working to get our sweet boy in remission and one day we are hoping to keep him there. Nate is an amazing 4 year old. He is so funny and has so much personality. He wants to be a pediatrician when he grows up and he can already kick some butt on the golf course. He is truly loved by everyone who knows him and he is everything to us.
