Academic Bridge Program Students Need Your Help!!

Donation protected
The Academic Bridge program (ABP) helps high-potential, first generation college students complete a college education. The program assists students with making the transition from high school to college through advising, mentoring, and tutoring.

ABP also helps students make the social adjustments to college life. ABP students participate in cultural awareness activities and community service projects. ABP students also are active on campus. They have served as campus leaders, established various organizations and volunteered at their high schools to recruit prospective ABP students.

ABP students have had the opportunity to receive scholarships or internships from major corporations such as AT&T, CISCO, and Ericsson, who are partners with UT Dallas.

The program boasts a graduation rate of approximately 70 percent — well above state and national averages and competitive with the rates of the best universities in Texas.

The program has a track record of success:

Approximately 90 percent of ABP students return as sophomores.
Approximately 45 percent major in engineering, science or business management.

Approximately 70 percent graduate with a bachelor’s degree, which is significantly higher than the University, state and national averages.

Established in 2000, Academic Bridge serves approximately 160 students each year. Most come from urban neighborhoods in the Dallas area and are the first in their families to attend college. Additional notable facts include:

Approximately eighty percent return as sophomores with at least a 2.5 GPA.

Approximately 45 percent of ABP students major in Engineering, Science, or Business Management.

Approximately 70 percent graduate – an average well above the University or state averages.

Approximately 30 percent of ABP alumni are pursuing graduate degrees and over 20 percent have received their degrees.

Since its inception, it has been my pleasure to help change the lives of students in this program, and I have been lucky enough to do so for quite some time now.  My staff and I help students in our program with their math and science from the summer when they graduate high school until they graduate college, and sometimes after that as well.

Unfortunately the climate we live in has forced statewide cutbacks in education, and our program has felt the effects.  I am not able to reach as many students as once could!! Their tuition assistance, housing, ability to buy books, and budget for tutoring is now in jeopardy.

I don't expect to hit the goal, but anything towards that goal, what the program costs per year would be amazing.  I work tirelessly to help these kids because I know I am making a difference in people's lives! Please help me and my staff make that difference.  Help these students on their path to success!!

ALL THE FUNDS WILL GO TO ASSISTING STUDENTS IN TUITION, IN HOUSING, AND FOR TUTORING STAFF ONLY!!  I am doing ok with real estate and my salary and I will be excluded from these funds as will any other staff non tutoring related.  However my staff is underpaid, and overworked due to being understaffed and under budget!

Anything is appreciated!!!

Here are the full student testimonials I used to make the compilation testimonial above and a few extras that I got after the video was done:

After the videos is a link to my nonprofit educational website that I have been working on for about 15 years now to give my students and anyone with an internet connection access to supplemental handouts, quizzes w solutions, and short educational videos!

Utdallas.edu/dept/abp is a nonprofit educational website that I have been working on in my spare time for the last 15 years. It has supplemental material for my students and anyone with an internet connection. I have handouts with clear and concise explanations & some examples, quizzes and solutions, and concept videos as well as beginner, intermediate, and advanced example videos that are about 5 min long.
