I thank you immensely for assisting me with the mitzvah of contributing to funeral funds (services & burial plot) for my father Joseph ben Avraham Madina, Alav HaShalom. May his soul ascend on high in the Heavens. Unfortunately, this was sudden and unexpected, and he didn't leave much behind. Your generosity during these times is greatly appreciated. Below, I share with you a tribute I wrote for my father, Joseph Almogue ben Avraham Madina, who was complete, even without his M.F.A and Ph.D. titles...
With a sad and heavy heart, I regret to announce the passing of my beloved father Joseph Madina ben Avraham, may his soul ascend high into the Heavens. However, it gives me great pride to say that my dad was a man of principle & passion whose character was beautifully balanced with genuine generosity & delightful humor.
As a child, I recall my father coming home to put me on his shoulders and run around with me endlessly in circular laughter. He had a glimmering wise & youthful soul. We used to play dress up a lot. My Aba would often wear a shirt on his head in a manner resembling a disheveled turban, match it up with an embarrassingly pretentious shirt and begin playing the flute like a snake charmer. That would have us chuckling for hours, in a split second. He slept with a towel on his face while clutching a large leopard-print pillow between his knees, you know, for sound sleep and ergonomic comfort. And I was always eager to tear open the Sunday Times making a bee-line to the Calendar section. I’d pore over the movie ads until I found our next trip to the box office.
But he would also sit me down and teach me how to play chess. Introduce me to classical music which I despised at the time but now have an affinity for. He is the same man who took me on trips, played music for me on his flute and mandolin, and told me I wouldn’t like the sip of beer I begged to taste when I was ten. He was right…To this day, my sister and I will never forget our epic trip to Yosemite where we floated down a local river in tubes, had a sleepless night due to thunderous snoring, and had the unique opportunity to hear Aba order his famous, “Yankee Pot Roast!”
Yes. When I was 12, I received the best gift I could ask for. The present was wrapped in love and handed to me in a bundle. The present was my sister. If you haven’t already, I would recommend you all ask your parents for one that’s as beautiful as mine. Thank you HaShem for making me a brother.
He was the father who yearned to give his children the world, and in all his precious years here on planet Earth, he became a father I will never forget, because he gave us something money just can’t buy. His love was boundless.
My heart holds special joy in the fact that he was able to celebrate with me at my wedding. To see his true legacy in action, he even had the chance to celebrate in the joy of the birth of his granddaughter. The day he held her in his arms—those memories will forever remain magical and timeless...
While many can say they have a dad, even fewer can say they have a father. But only I can say my father was Joseph Madina Almogue.
May his legacy be forever, and his soul rest eternally in the Heavens--Baruch Dayan HaEmet.
