Jean Ardith (Hamilton) VanderMeer was born 15 February 1932. On 14 March 2018 she joined her children Karl VanderMeer and Cheri Barrington in heaven.
Born in International Falls, MN Jean made her way to Seattle, WA where she settled in and raised her three children Susan, Cheri and Karl as a single mother.
Jean leaves behind her daughter Susan Gallegos and several grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as many friends.
Jean touched many people in her life. She was kind, caring and the definition of love.
In Jeans work as a caregiver in nursing homes she was often assigned to the difficult patients the other nurses did not like to work with. She had the ability to handle them with the utmost patience and understanding.
Jean was awarded a couple certificates from the City of Seattle for her humanitarian efforts including going into prisons to visit inmates where she would help them learn to read, pray with them and share the Bible with them.
Once upon a on a time she was known to the homeless as the “sandwich lady”. Doing her own street ministry she would make meatloaf then use it to make meatloaf sandwiches which she would then take and hand out to homeless people in downtown Seattle and on Capital Hill in Seattle. For those who couldn’t eat meatloaf she would bring peanut butter sandwiches. The homeless she took the time to cook for and to talk to always appreciated her friendship and generosity.
She once had a wrong number call her phone and wound up with a new friend. The man who called had misdialed one digit but his mistake lead him to someone he found easy to talk to. He then called her every week to talk with her about whatever was on his mind. She was a long distance shoulder for him to cry on.
For her grandchildren she was the “cookie grandma” as she often would bring them homemade cookies. For many years she was the cement that held the family together.
Now the family needs your help. Jean did not have life insurance and there is no money in the bank to pay for her cremation and funeral. If you are able to donate anything at all it will be very appreciated.
Any money raised above the funeral parlor costs will be donated in Jeans name to Union Gospel Mission.
