Hazel's family has asked that any future donations be passed on to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Jim Pattison Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan in Hazel's name. Here is the link to their Memorial Donations page.
Our little Hazel was a strong little fighter. Unfortunately this fight was one she couldn’t win. We are asking for help to support her parents Cynthia and Derek in this time of grieving with the upcoming funeral expenses.
The Quick Facts
- Hazel was taken to hospital on Saturday October 5, 2019 with an unknown illness.
- Hazel passed away in the afternoon on Monday October 7, 2019.
- The doctors do not know why Hazel got sick and deteriorated so quickly. We are awaiting multiple test results. They did everything they could for her.

Hazel’s Story
Hazel Orianna Loucks was born on February 12, 2018 to two extremely loving parents and a whole bunch of loving family and friends. She was spunky from the start and it was obvious no one was going to mess with her.
Only a few weeks old and you could tell that she didn’t want to miss out on anything. She was always observing her surroundings and refused to nap easily if there was company over.
As Hazel got older her little personality began to shine through. She was extremely kind and caring towards anyone she met. She would always share with you, even if you didn’t really want some pre-bitten or pre-crushed food. Hazel loved to help her dad work on his car or build things. She liked to sit in the corner of the couch and hold your hand. She loved holding your hand.
Just before she passed, Hazel’s favourite show was Puffin Rock on Netflix. When Hazel asked to watch it she would grab the remote and say “Rock?, Rock?”. There would be a few sad moments for her when she was told, “No, not yet.” Hazel would bounce and giggle uncontrollably when her parents would turn it on for her.
Hazel’s Last Few Days
On Tuesday October 1st Hazel was feeling fine. She was healthy and happily playing like any other day. On Wednesday October 2nd she went to daycare and came home a little under the weather. The morning of Thursday October 3rd she presented with cold-like symptoms. Her parents took her to see a doctor on Friday October 4th when it seemed it might be more than just a cold.
Saturday October 5th Hazel was taken to the pediatric emergency at the new Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon. Shortly after they arrived, Hazel had two seizures. She was rushed upstairs to the PICU and she was very lethargic. She was given IV fluids while the doctors did tests. By Sunday it became apparent that she was “leaky”. All the fluid going in to her was not coming out. Her abdomen, feet and other extremities began to swell. After more tests Hazel was put on a breathing machine to ensure her throat wouldn’t collapse in her weakened state. Late Sunday night Hazel was unresponsive and her heart started to fail. The cardiologist informed us that Hazel was going to need to be hooked up to an ECMO machine and transported to Edmonton. Hazel was extremely ill and we were all very worried about her. The cardiologist watched her heart while we waited for the Edmonton ECMO team to get ready and arrive in Saskatoon. Hazel was in critical condition and her vitals were failing. However, she had that stubborn Loucks blood in her, and miraculously she stabilized enough for the doctors to call off the ECMO request and her vitals improved. At around 3am the cardiologist informed us that with medication assisting her, her heart was again pumping strongly on its own. By this point it was confirmed that Hazel had an inner ear infection and a lung infection. A catheter was placed in each of her lungs to help drain the build-up of fluids. Shortly after shift-change (around 8am) Monday morning Hazel also had a catheter placed in her abdomen to help remove the fluid build-up there as well. She was also put on dialysis to help give her kidneys a break. Around lunch time CPR was administered as a precaution to help get her heart beating stronger again. Hazel stabilized again. It was a rollercoaster that we were all on and we were not willing to get off without her.
At approximately 4 o’clock in the afternoon on Monday October 7th the doctors were unable to find a pulse. The team began CPR and intermittent pulse checks. At 4:30pm, Hazel Orianna Loucks took a trip to heaven.
No one knows what went wrong. We are still awaiting a diagnosis and a cause of death.
