Dear friends and colleagues of Martin Conboy,
We are writing to let you know that on February 19th Martin suffered two back to back cardiac arrests in Paris, France.
After two weeks of being close to death Martin is slowly recovering in a University hospital ICU in central Paris. It is hoped that with ongoing intensive care, Martin will pull through and once again be his usual candid self.
The financial burden to Martin, his family and loved ones is mounting daily. The bills are massive.
Our first priority is to get Martin home to Ottawa. His doctors indicate that without any set-backs he may be cleared for air ambulance return to an ICU in Ottawa late next week. This is better news than any of us expected, but comes at a staggering cost.
How long it will take Martin to recover completely is uncertain. We know that the treatments Martin is receiving in France are not covered by any insurance and that, as a freelance theatre and architectural lighting designer, there will be no income as he convalesces.
Many of you have seen Martin's lighting designs on stages across Canada - from Neptune Theatre in Halifax to the National Arts Centre in Ottawa to the Belfry Theatre in Victoria, and many, many places in between. Others will have seen his work but not clocked his name.
Some of you will walk by the National War Memorial across from Parliament Hill in Ottawa and enjoy its evening beauty but not know the design is Martin's. The same goes for the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France. We could go on and on. Martin has had a vaunted career, and it is a career we want to continue.
The money you are donating will offset the bills that have accumulated, and establish a fund to care for Martin as he finds the strength to once again inspire us with the beauty of his work.
