Funds for Shatier

Donation protected

This is the fundraising page for a dear friend, Shateir Butler.

Shateir is a young African-American woman who has lived in San Diego, California for half of her life. She is a frisbee player, activist, youth development teacher, National Champion in slam poetry, and she is currently facing becoming homeless within the next week.

Shateir has until April 24th, 2020 to find a new housing situation.

Last summer, 2019, she lived in a reduced-cost apartment in San Diego. In the Fall of 2019 she decided to live out of her car to save money on rent. In mid-March, 2020 Shateir had to give back her rental car as she could not make the payments anymore after losing both her youth development job at the YMCA and job driving for Uber due to Covid-19. Around the same time, she reached out to a friend, Katie Van Note, who offered to let Shateir squat in her apartment in Kennsington until April, 24th - when Katie would need to move out.

For the past month, Shateir has been reaching out to the members of her family - 4 half-brothers and their mom - in Fresno, CA (who she has stayed with in the past), and no one has responded

Right now she is living off of >$100/week from Unemployment Income that she uses for food. She just got a job working 2-3 days/week at a Family Dollar in San Diego.

**********

Shateir’s value to the ultimate frisbee community, to the activism and slam poetry community, to the dance community, to the spiritual community, to the community of children, parents, and child educators, and to the people she interacts with every day in San Diego - is imperative.

Shateir is resilient as all hell, she is committed to empowering people through poetry, she is committed to childhood education and development, she is kind, giving, open-hearted, energetic, and graceful even in the toughest of times.

We are aiming to raise $3,000 to cover the cost of reduced-price rent in San Diego for the next 3 months.

This would allow Shateir to find a secure apartment in San Diego, focus on her mental health and healing through social services, have the security of community support to rely on where she has had none, and the time to work on developing her own long-term financial stability.
