Funds For Faith- Eye Surgery Support

Tax deductible
Little Faith showed up at our door on January 30th during a typical Toledo snowy day.  She was found by some Good Samaritans on the side of the road who immediately knew she needed help.  Faith, a miniature smooth haired dachshund, was 4 weeks old when she arrived but something was not quite right.  Her left eye appeared to be missing and her right eye was partially obscured by the 3rd eyelid.  She was healthy and happy otherwise but certainly would not have survived in the cold at her age or with her vision issues.

Toledo Animal Rescue met with ophthalmologists at Blue Pearl in Springfield, Michigan to get an expert opinion regarding her eyes and long term course of action.  Her diagnosis:  Microphthalmia and Entropion in both eyes with the left more severe than the right.  Microphthalmia is an eye abnormality that arises before birth. In this condition, one or both eyeballs are abnormally small. In some affected animals, the eyeball may appear to be completely missing; however, even in these cases some remaining eye tissue is generally present. Entropion is a condition in which the eyelid turns inward so that that skin rubs against the eye surface causing irritation and vision impairment.

Faith will have surgery on both eyes on May 11 with an approximate 2-4 week recovery period.  The left eye (which has no functional vision) is to be removed and the right 3rd eyelid will be repaired to allow for exposure of the globe to improve her vision in that eye.  The total cost of the surgeries and follow up care will be $3,500.

Faith is an amazing dog who is not letting her disability stop her.  She regularly plays with other dogs much larger than her and holds her own.  She gets around pretty well, relying on her other senses and a little help from her 2 legged friends.  With the surgery and recovery time, we fully expect Faith to regain much of her vision and live a long and happy life with a lucky adoption family. Her lucky adopters will be hand pick for her once she is ready to go home. Until that time, she will stay and thrive in foster care and continue to be the feisty, fun and playful little lady she is!
