Seini Boletawa was only 26 when her life was taken on Friday 7 June in a terrible act of domestic violence. She was 3 months pregnant and a man (her partner) has been charged with her death and is now on trial at the Fijian High Court. We cannot say more about this as it is a criminal offence and before the courts, But Seini's family, friends and the Fijian community are shocked and grieving at the loss of such a beautiful soul, taken away too soon.
Seini's two children (ages 9 and 5) are now left without a mother and we are setting up this fundraiser to help Seini's parents care for them the way that Seini would have wished. Seini had a love for life and was always smiling. She had been working with social enterprise 'Loving Islands' and had been teaching organic farming and practices out in rural communities helping to empower people. She was a beautiful, caring person and had a bright future ahead of her.
Seini was buried on Thursday 13 June. Her parents who are from Matuku Island, Fiji could not attend because there was no boat traveling from the remote island to the mainland in time for the funeral.
We hope to raise a minimum of $10,000 so that the family can focus on healing and looking after Seini's two children. Now that their mum is gone they will be in need of help from their community. Hopefully we can bring some financial relief to them in this incredibly hard time. The money raised will go towards the children's ongoing care, family boat fares, travel expenses, clothing, medical expenses and food during this very sad time.
Any money raised over $10,000 will help put the children through high school on the main land in Suva and will help them get an education that can see them do well in life, just as Seini would have wanted. This money will go towards school fees, uniforms, food and accomodation, which is a lot for a small rural family to pay for. With our help, we can give Seini's children a bright future. We cannot bring Seini back, but we can give what we can to help her family recover. Please share this fundraiser with any one who might be interested in donating.
Fiji's rates of violence against women are "among the very highest in the world". The Fiji Women's Crisis Centre reports that 64% of women who have been in intimate relationships have experienced physical or sexual violence from their partner, including 61% who were physically attacked and 34% who were sexually abused. That is more than half the female population. If we can help Seini's family, then we are making a small difference to a larger problem that requires education, resources, family counselling and mental health support. Seini may be gone, but we can support her family from around the world through donating what we can. Seini may be gone but she is not forgotten. Her light lives on and we will remember her always.
