Kevin Percy Sands was born on the 25/03/1987. He grew to be a loving father of five, fiancé, son, grandson, brother, uncle to 21 nieces and nephews and friend to many. It is safe to say, Kevin was a family man, he loved his family fiercely and was looked up to by most. He was a proud Indigenous man, the eldest of six children. Growing up as the oldest, Kevin was the back bone of his family, always doing his best to provide for his family. In April of 2004, he met Amanda; She quickly became someone Kevin knew he would spend the rest of his life with. Over the years Kev and Amanda started their own family and moved to QLD from NSW in hopes to start their future together and raise their babies. With their five beautiful children aged 3 through to 13, Kevin was always trying to maintain employment and do the best to provide for his family. In 2018, due to medical conditions, Kevin lost his leg. This was a massive blow to their family, it put Kevin out of work and left Amanda trying her best to look after him as well as their 5 beautiful children, but never once did they let this get them down. They persevered with what they had and knew that things will start to look up sometime soon. Fast forward to now, October 2020 – After 18 years of ups and downs, just as things were starting to look promising for a change, Amanda went to a disability expo in hopes to learn about more supports for Kevin and walked away with a job offer! While this was hard for Kevin, as he felt it was his responsibility to be the protector and provider of the family, he agreed this was an opportunity to good for Amanda to pass up.
Not only a day later, tragedy struck, one that will never leave the mind of Amanda and her brother in-law who tirelessly fought to do CRP on Kevin.. As paramedics came, they took over the attempt to resuscitate, with the kids sleeping in the other room, no idea of the sorrow they would wake to, all efforts to revive Kevin failed and he slipped away from his loved ones in the early hours of Thursday the 22nd. “THIS WAS UNRELATED TO HIS MEDICAL CONDITION “ This day will haunt the family for eternity, a tragic accident in the middle of the night, one that no one would have foreseen, and so much so it shook the entire family unit. Their rock, their provider, their father, their loved one.. grew his wings and was ripped away from his family.
As you may imagine, at such a young age, there was no life insurance, no plan for death, no security put in to place, it was just never supposed to happen they way it did and when it did, he was to young, had to much going for him and had children to love longer. I can go on and on about this, and it is with a very heavy heart that we must reach out to the wider Australian community to seek support at this traumatic time. We know with COVID and life in general, it may be hard to donate to this, but I implore you, take a moment to think about Amanda and those five children who are in the middle of being evicted (Another long story) and now have the financial burden of trying to bury Kevin.
We are asking for anything, anything you feel in your heart that you can contribute to make this stressful, tragic situation even just a little bit easier. every single $1 will be used wisely and will go a long way. God knows our family is not ones to beg, or ask for help, but this is such a hard time right now that we are grateful for any support that can be offered to Amanda and her children.
·       Expenses will be used for the following:
To transfer Kevin from Toowoomba, QLD to his home town of  Walgett NSW – This is where most of his family have been laid to rest, and we are desperate to allow Kevin that same dignity.
·       Funeral expenses such as casket, plot and headstone plus all other expenses that come with it.
·       Money for Amanda, the kids and Kevin’s mother and siblings to travel to Walgett NSW with him.
·       Any remaining funds will be used to secure a bond for Amanda and the children to move into a new house and help them get on their feet and adjust to life without Kevin.
As mentioned earlier, I can go on and on, but I will leave it here. I hope I gave you a picture of a loving family, desperate for the help you can offer. As a family, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for taking the time to read this and any contribution you see fit.
Many thanks,
Written on behalf of Amanda.
