Trixy Crowe is our niece. Please make a donation to help with her travel, living, and out of pocket medical expenses when she goes to M.D. Anderson in June.
Trixy's Story:
My name is Trixy. I am 48 years old. In March, 2011, I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, on my tongue. I was a single Mom, with two teenagers. I had never used any tobacco products. In April, I had a 14 hour surgery to remove the cancer, a section of my tongue, neck dissection, and reconstruction. The treatment protocol of 34 radiation treatments, along with chemo was dreadful. I lost 66 pounds. Eventually, I started to get better. In 2014, I began having unbearable pain in my right jaw, and was diagnosed with osteonecrosis (bone death). I had a 12 hour surgery to reconstruct my jaw bone, using a piece of my tibula, and arteries, with a metal prosthesis to hold it all in place. There was another round of feeding tubes, treatments, trying to learn to eat again, feel comfortable with my remission, and deal with constant pain.
In March of this year, I was diagnosed with osteonecrosis on the left jaw. My team of doctors here have referred me to M.D. Anderson in Houston, where I will consult with an oral cancer surgeon, who has a good success rate with cancer patients in my predicament. I am apprehensive, but trying to remain hopeful. My biggest fear is being so far from my home, and family, not to mention the enormous expense of it all.
