The Activated People (TAP) is raising funds in order to reorganize from an LLC to a non-profit. The fees will go towards legal and registration fees.
TAP was founded in 2019 to promote racial equity through advocacy. In 2021, we developed a three-year strategic plan to support our evolution into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to improve racial justice outcomes in Virginia to encourage equity and inclusion across the nation. Our vision is communities of activists who are educated about political processes and engaged in making a more equal and inclusive society. We are founded on and guided by the values of racial justice, collective liberation, community, centering and uplifting people of color, and transformation. Our objectives are to encourage equitable outcomes for black and brown people through racial justice advocacy, and to build and support engaged communities of color through community education and Get Activated Training to affect positive change and prepare social justice leaders.
Racial justice advocacy will be centered around the key issues of: 1. Legal justice: increasing police accountability and ending mass incarceration; 2. Voting rights: eliminating barriers and expanding access to voting; 3. Education: increasing access to quality education to Black and Brown communities; 4. Housing and economic justice: promoting economic growth in Black and Brown communities and eliminating environmental hazards in housing; and 5. environmental justice: promoting safe and healthy communities of colors, with access to clean air, clean water, and other vital resources.
Specific legislative/policy agendas will be developed and updated focused on local, state, and federal advocacy. Community education will include forums, town halls, round tables,
and on-the-ground actions to promote conversations and provide information to directly impacted communities about issues and related legislation and policies, as well as to activate communities to self-advocacy and to build partnerships. The GetACTIVATED! Training that will be provided by The Activated People will empower Black and Brown communities to create coalitions, enhance outreach efforts, and affect change for the needs of the community to enhance their quality of life now and in the future. This training
will also serve as preparation for tomorrow’s social justice leaders. Our focus is on building racial equity and centering and supporting communities of color.
Though much of our outreach will be focused in Black and Brown communities, everyone who is interested in participating in this transformational social justice work is welcome. The Activated People is currently a volunteer-run organization, led by our Board of Directors, including Kofi Annan, Charles Brown, Theresa Quitto-Dickerson, and Valerie Slater.
We are in the process of applying for recognition from the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) organization, and will subsequently submit applications to the state of Virginia to register to make charitable solicitations, for exemption from sales and use taxes, and other necessary state or local applications and registrations.
