Paying for college is a struggle that most students face. But experiencing something horrific that completely turns your life upside-down is something that can make these financial burdens impossible.
As a Georgia State University Junior in late March 2019, my brother, James, was the target of a life-threatening robbery and shooting in East Point, Atlanta. He was walking in broad daylight around 2:30pm, leaving an appointment to go back to the dorms. He didn't get far until he was accosted and left with a bullet through his stomach- fracturing his spine, hitting his Iliac Vein and causing a blood clot, losing feeling in the lower half of his left leg, and fracturing his pelvis.
James was in the hospital for 2 1/2 weeks, receiving surgeries, treatments, and was unable to talk, eat, or drink for over a week. The damage left him wheelchair-bound for over a month until he slowly learned to walk again, and the nerve pain is something that he still battles to this day, on top of deep psychological trauma.
Something that couldn't be taken away, though, was his ambitions.
James is finally ready to continue his education, and wants to finish his Literature degree (and someday go on to grad school). However, the school refuses to allow him to finish his degree, or even release his transcripts for him to continue on an online university, until the $10,000 balance can be paid in full. With the added stress of hospital bills and financial restraints due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, this is not feasible for our family to do on our own.
That's where you come in.
With your help, James could finally take his life back and continue his education. Our family could breathe and heal. Every dollar raised would make the weight of these grueling set-backs a little bit lighter, and allow him to move one more step forward. Though this is only a glimpse into what has fractured our family since last spring, I hope it is enough to convey the amount of love and gratitude that would be felt from every penny donated. All donations would be supporting the noblest of causes- allowing my brother to accomplish great things with the life that he fought so hard keep.
