Nourish's Fundong Water & Health Project

Donation protected
Eight members from the Claremont and Cal Poly Pomona chapters of Nourish International are partnering with Better Family Foundation, an NGO based in Fundong, Cameroon.  Nourish is a nationalwide student movement that seeks to "engage students and empower communities to make a lasting impact on extreme poverty."  The Nourish model for development emphasizes the importance of establishing mutually beneficial partnerships between Nourish groups and local grassroots NGOs, with the belief that the key to eradicating poverty is empowering community leaders who have sustainable, scalable solutions and vision yet lack the funds and resources for development projects.

This summer our chapters are partnering with Better Family Foundation.  BFF's mission is to "provide free education, training, counseling, and financial aid to all families in need so that they may gain access to the tools they need to improve their lives."

In Fundong, we will collaborate with BFF to implement two projects over seven weeks.  The first is developing sustainable, safe water infrastructure, which includes constructing a water system and training a self-governed Water Management Committee.  The Fundong region that BFF serves is rural, and comprised of 80% subsistence farmers, and lacks infrastructure as well as safe water sources.

The second project is leading sexual reproduction and HIV/AIDS and other STI seminars.  These seminars will be targeted to two marginalized groups, orphans and young widows.  Cameroon has an extremely high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, 4.5%, and safe sex is very much a taboo topic for locals.  We have a unique opportunity to provide education and awareness, with the overall goal of a reduction in the incidence of HIV infections among these high-risk groups.

Both of these projects address needs that were specifically identified by the community.  We have and will continue to work closely with BFF and locals to ensure that the projects are as effective and well-received by the community as possible.

Last year, four members of the Nourish International Claremont Chapter partnered with BFF to implement very similar projects in Fundong, Cameroon (see photo above).  The collaboration was successful, and both projects--a water pipeline construction and HIV workshops for local youths--were very well-recieved by the community.

Your donation will help us to travel to Fundong and implement
these projects.  By contributing, you are enabling eight motivated and passionate students to utilize the opportunity to collaborate with a local NGO, empowering community members and working for sustainable solutions to social justice issues.

Each of the eight team member's expenses come to approximately $2300.  Airfare to Cameroon makes up around three quarters of that, or about $1600.  The remaining $700 is comprised of travel from hometown to the departure city, mandatory travel insurance, visa fees, vaccinations, housing, utilities, in-country transportation, and food.

We thank you so much for your support!
