Help Fund my United World College tuition

Omi's GoFundMe Video

After a very long and very competitive selection process, I was accepted at Pearson college in Victoria, Canada, one of the 18 United World Colleges that aim to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. This is not just a slogan. I believe in the importance of getting out my comfort zone, to be challenged and to challenge others with respect about how to achieve our common peaceful and sustainable future.

I was awarded full scholarships to participate in UWC short summer courses in India and Wales. I slept in a temple in a small village near the Pune campus, on the floor while experiencing life with my host family and spent hours planting rice with them. I stayed in a dorm in Wales with a Muslim friend who would get up at dawn to pray. I followed Indian environmental journalists in their interviews in villages. I heard and talked to Tibetan monks in Dharam Sala and heard a different take than the Chinese take on what happened in Tibet. These are only a few of the experiences that really attract me to the UWC movement.

UWC celebrates difference. Difference is something I understand deeply. I am honored and blessed to have access to three amazing cultures: Chinese, Indian and French. It is a gift and at the same time, it feels like a responsibility. Because multi-cultural people have the ability to see one same problem from different perspectives, it is our duty to share this special skill with others. I believe the world needs more multicultural thinking. We need to be able to take a distance in order to find solutions to our problems.

Pearson UWC is heavily focused on celebrating and understanding the rights of native Indians whom we can learn much from as they lived sustainably with respect for nature. Pearson offers Marine Science and manages an island nature reserve. I have a passion for the ocean since I was a child and it is my dream to understand it better so as to help preserve it.

One of my other passions is photography. I like observing people and telling a moment of their story through photos or films. One of the projects I did was to make a 40-mn film on my 4 grandparents. I really like stories and learning from people and their experiences. After making my film on my grandparents I learned a lot about suffering and happiness. I think combining my passion for photography and the oceans and people's stories, I could actively contribute to the UWC mission by making us, including myself, in my humble way, think about these issues in order to find creative solutions.

Tuition for two years at Pearson United World College, Room and Board and all included is CAD121,540 equivalent to 79,471 Euros. My family needs to pay the first year of tuition by the end of July 2020. My parents who are freelance and independent filmmakers are able to cover half that amount. I am trying to raise funds for 40,000 Euros.
I am aware that it is a big sum but every little bit counts and is truly appreciated.
I would like to thank each and every one of you for any donation you can make and for forwarding the link to your friends.
