Hey everyone, my name is Carmelle and I'm raising money for my best friend and practically family member: Hadassa Holzapfel to go to med school at the Medical School for International Health in Israel and achieve her dreams of becoming a doctor.
This is why you should help her:

3. She is brilliant and I'm not just saying that. She has been doing cancer research at Mount Sinai for the past three years and wants to be a surgical oncologist. Talk about being an amazing person and making a difference!! Because of your help, she will be able to save lives one day. Save lives!!

Here's her story:
She was born in Munich, Germany and lived most of her formative years in Germany. She has always been a very academic student, wanting to achieve the best in every subject. Due to her strong work ethic and natural intelligence she was accepted to the highest level of secondary schooling in Germany (Gymnasium). Outside of school she had many interests including swimming, dancing, art, and most importantly choir. Many of these interests however, she had to give up due to family budget constraints, except for choir.
For seven years, she was in the choir, which enabled her to perform in various countries, such as France, Italy and Austria, culminating in her performance at the opera Carmen. Her family has never been financially stable and once her parents got divorced, Hadassa's mother raised five children single-handedly without any support. Because of this, at age 13, Hadassa started working as a tutor in Latin, English, Math and Hebrew to bring in extra money.
In the eleventh grade, her school offered the opportunity for students to study abroad, after careful consideration, she attended Maimonides School in Boston, Massachusetts, and although she had never attended a Jewish day school before, she was excited about the challenges and new opportunities. She was very fortunate to get a scholarship, and boarded with a local family.
Upon her return to Germany, she excelled even more and received her Latinum, Graecum and Hebraicum (Latin, Ancient Greek and Biblical Hebrew exam awards) in addition to the Abitur (the German diploma) while graduating at the top 3% of her class. In addition to being editor-in-chief of the yearbook and fundraising for it, she became involved in community service, working at an old age home as a caregiver. After high school, she attended Midreshet Harova in Jerusalem to learn more about her heritage.
She then moved to New York on her own in August 2012 to attend college at Yeshiva University, which offered her a generous financial merit-based scholarship and she became part of the Honors program. Hadassa had to pick up several part time jobs on campus since it did not cover all her expenses, starting as a waitress and eventually taking the role as Weekend Coordinator in Dining Services.
She participated in the CJF Women's Leadsership Fellowship, which brought together highly successful professional women to serve as role models and discuss issues like work-family balance. She participated in the Yeshiva University (YU) Houston Pre-Med program, which sent her along with three other YU students to Houston, Texas to volunteer at MD Anderson Cancer Center, which further instilled her passion for cancer research and medicine. Hadassa also worked at Weill-Cornell in Dr. Miklos Toth’s lab to investigate non-DNA mediated transmission of behavior across generations. It was one of her many excursions into scientific research, which included volunteering in Dr. Marc Birtwistle’s lab at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and then receiving a highly-esteemed SURP Roth Scholarship for summer research at Montefiore/Einstein in Dr. Ljiliana Vasovic’s lab. The research was presented at the ISCT 2015 Conference in Las Vegas and the abstract was published in a supplemental version of Cytotherapy. This was her first professional recognition, soon to be followed by becoming a recipient of the Student Mentor Academic Research Training (SMART) Award funded by TranScience and Biotium. She went on to publish several papers.

Hadassa went to Yeshiva University in NYC on a full ride scholarship and graduated summa cum laude with Honors. At graduation, Hadassa received the “American Institute of Chemists Award for Excellence in Chemistry” and she continued her work at Mt. Sinai in Dr. Birtwistle's lab where she was offered a patent on her research.
Hadassa is an extremely talented, smart young woman and I have full confidence that she is going to go far in life, constantly helping and being there for anyone who crosses her path. Given the opportunity, she will be a doctor this world is lacking. Help her out so she can fulfill her dream of helping patients worldwide fight this horrific, detrimental disease.
