Funding for St Lukes Primary Scl, Bolgatanga,Ghana

Donation protected
We are two transition year students in Temple Carrig Secondary School, Greystones. On the 29th of January 2020 we are flying out to Bolgatanga, Ghana in Africa. We will be staying there for a week and while we are there we hope to learn about a different culture and a different way of life and we hope to gain an understanding of the differences and similarities between us. We are going on this trip with Susan Hennessy who lived in Bolgatanga for a year and a half some years ago, where she worked with local development groups. We are funding this trip on our own but are hoping to raise some money for one of the local schools (St Lukes Primary School, Kansinga) to cover essential teaching materials and equipment, new library stock, as well as sports and crafts materials. We would also like to contribute towards the fund created to support families who cannot meet the financial costs, including school fees, uniform and school materials. Donating money to St. Luke’s School will mean that all the materials are bought locally which supports the local economy.

Any amount of money can help and is appreciated. You can read more about the school and its connection with our home town of Greystones, below. Thanks in advance,

Katie Ivory and Ava Madden

St. Luke’s primary school is based near the rural village of Kansingo, 15km from Bolgatanga, Upper East Ghana. The school was an initiative of a self-organised group of parents, who funded the initial building of the three class rooms, made from mud bricks, which they built themselves. The efforts of the community were recognised and the regional government subsequently funded an official school structure, adding another three class rooms. In 2008, the Greystones community further supported the building of three more classrooms and a library, as well as the development of playground.

A very driven Parents’ Association tries to ensure St. Luke’s school gets the continued support of local government. However, with low tax revenues from the local government in the region, it is difficult to adequately fund all schools in the community, so any contribution to the school would be greatly accepted and appreciated. Thanks again, Katie and Ava
